[It's getting to be nighttime when Aradia films this. She's sitting on a sofa a little ways back from the camera, with a small stack of papers on the coffee table in front of her, and waves once she's sure it's recording.]

Hello, everybody. My name is Aradia Megido, Maid of Time. As you might guess from my title I have a great deal of experience with time travel. But while I have been here I've noticed a major flaw in the Initiative's overall plan; namely, that they don't seem to have any idea how time travel works.

[She reaches over and picks up the first paper, showing it to the camera:]

Image below cut )

As you can see, the basic idea is that, by traveling back in time and altering certain events, we can sabotage the United Earth and improve our situation in the present.

[She pulls up a second diagram, holding the two side by side:]

Another image below cut )

In reality it is a little more complicated than that. Let's say, here, that the red timeline is one in which the desired result is achieved, whether that's the United Earth losing power or never achieving dominance in the first place, whatever. We'll call this "Timeline Alpha". The blue timeline is ours, in which a result occurs which we want to prevent. Let's say, the UE dominating the planet and everybody else dying.

As you can see, the time traveler does change the targeted key event. However, all this does is link two separate timelines, contingent upon how that event happened. Timeline Alpha continues with the alteration in place, but the offshoot timeline that caused the alteration continues without it. Because obviously, if no timeline existed where the event needed to be changed, no one would have gone back in time to change it.

[She puts down those two and picks up a third diagram instead:]

Yup another image )

This leads us to the fundamental paradox of time travel, which is: the alpha timeline simultaneously must be changed, and cannot be changed. It is the final result when all temporal meddling is taken into account, as well as the only viable version of the timeline. All alternate timelines are, by their nature, doomed. Think of it as paradox space's way of cleaning up before things get too messy.

[Switching pictures again!]

The image pile doesnt stop from getting taller )

Of course, you can travel within the alpha timeline as well, but only within the context of stable time loops. That's where you cause an event to play out in the way it already did. This is the only way you can affect the past without creating a doomed timeline.

That leads me to the first point I wanted to make - I don't think I'll have time to make the second, since the timer is coming up on five minutes already and I do want people to actually watch this.

[She picks up the first image again, holding it next to the fourth.]

Basically, either A) our time travel missions are having or will have a tangible effect on the alpha timeline, but our timeline is a doomed offshoot and will die off sooner or later; or B) this is the alpha timeline, but our intervention is and will be the direct cause of the current circumstances.

[PHEW. That was way more than a hundred words! She puts down both pictures and folds her hands neatly in her lap.]

I think that explains it adequately. Let me know if you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them. Thank you for your time! [PUN VERY INTENDED 0u0]

What is a bard, to you in your world?

This is something that's worried me for a little while now. I've been thinking about it in my own world and circumstances, and... I still don't have an answer. Which worries me.

I want other's thoughts, that I might better understand what I think I am.

[Action, Around the town]

*At various bars, streets, and other areas, Pidonus can be found, lute in hand, playing a melody a few may have heard from the distance.

Someone here must have taught her this piece, at some point, for it's in English. And even the locals are stopping frequently to it's not-quite-rhythmic melodies and lyrics speaking of a world more like her own than where she was now.

More unusually, even for those who have heard Pidonus play before, this time, she is actively singing.

Perhaps you would care to join her?*

[The feed clicks on to a very somber-looking Rita. She opens her mouth to say something, but shakes her head, remaining silent for several more seconds. Eventually, she sighs and starts:]

I'm... not that good with stuff like this. I've been avoiding people for the last few weeks because I didn't want to deal with it, and I know now's not really a good time, what with all the new people. But... there's no way around it now.

[She looks right at the camera, and if you're looking closely, it's like her eyes are... out of focus. Is something wrong?]

I can't really see anymore, after I got too close to a bomb few weeks back. Anything really close, I can work with - I can still use this thing, at least. But anything much further than that, it gets blurry real quick, and at distances it's like nothing stands still. So... I'm pretty much useless for what I'm good at, right now. I'm not really... coping with it very well, and I'm trying to figure out what the hell I'll be good for like this. Maybe research, I guess, or spellwork. But I don't think I can fight like this. Before anyone asks, I tried glasses; they almost worked for a minute or three, until I got a horrible headache I couldn't function through. So that's a thing. Uh... so, I guess I'm looking for work that doesn't require me to actually be able to function.

[A long moment passes, the girl having a look of being totally lost for a second, before Rita throws up her hands, reaching to stop the video feed.]

I don't even know why I did this. Dammit.

[Anyone out near the outskirts of the city will notice some non-trivial magic being cast, though apparently not at anything. Just practice, evidently.

Anyone looking at their tablets, on the other hand...]

I would kill for something like this on a regular basis. Being able to talk over a long distance with my hands free is amazing.

[Following this is a battery of spells, punctuating some more speech:]

If I'd had something like this at home, then I wouldn't have to worry so much about the party splitting up whenever Yuri did something stupid and caused trouble.

[...Not that you'd know over the telepathic link; her speech aloud isn't broadcasting, but she got at least three spells in over this sentence, with their callouts. She's starting to escalate to higher spells, though... someone might want to stop her.]

[Rise's been here for nearly three months now, and has yet to post anything on the network. It's just... so hard to keep herself perky and happy like she's used to being in public appearances.

But today, that doesn't seem to matter. Sure, she has some friends here, but she feels so alone sometimes... and tomorrow is...

... Well, whatever. Rise looks into the camera and manages a smile.]

Hey, everyone!

[Wow, this is awkward after everything that's happened.]

... Sorry I never introduced myself. I've been here since March, but... it's just been so crazy.

[Her smile drops completely as she speaks. How can she keep smiling when she's thinking about that disaster with that Elmer person's world...?]

... I guess I just... wanted to let everyone know I was here. All the "transports", I mean. All we really have is each other in this place, y'know?

[This was a bad idea. Horrible timing. But she goes with it anyway, forcing a friendly smile again.]

I guess I just wanna say I'm here if anyone needs a friend.

[She tries not to think about all the friends she's already lost here. So many people just going back home, and yet she's still here...

... But she also has new friends that are still around. And her job at the café. It's not all terrible. It just might feel that way for a while, after everything...

Suddenly, she gives a quiet chuckle.]

Sorry. I'm not really my usual self today.

Come see me at NORA Café sometime! I'll be much better company there!

[The video ends with a much more genuine smile. Sad as this place can be, Rise's strong. She can bounce back, even if it does take a while.]

[He looks like he could use a nap, and he sounds a bit, well, almost bored.]

I suppose introductions are in order. My name is Kirian Dawningsun, and I've met a handful of you already.

[He manages half of a smile. Look, he's attempting to be pleasant.]

Due to a more recent message on this network, I would like to take the opportunity to offer my skills as a tailor. I do not work for charity, but I am rather skilled in men's and women's garments.  I'm certain that you'll find any cost will be well worth it.  I can enchant garments, as well, though I'm afraid I do not have the materials to offer more than very simple ones at this time- fire resistance in the cloth, and the like.

I ask only that you contact me to negotiate the terms of the work, and allow me a bit of time to finish the garment. Payment is required in advance, to pay for the materials necessary.

Thank you.

[It's the low, rusty voice of the maniac who had been hacking falling debris out of the air during the crash. He is calm now.]

Situation Report.

[A long pause, then he remembers that not everyone here has a military background]

Is everyone okay?

((ooc note: Should have mentioned this earlier but Raiden will be reading people's names on his device, since they appear when a character posts by default. Let me know if your character is replying anonymously or has changed their display name somehow.))

I was just about ready to introduce myself like everyone seems to like doing on this thing. And then the housing building went and got hit by a... spaceship. What the hell is going on!? And... it may not have been mine for very long, but my room's gone with the explosion! Where... where am I supposed to live!?

[There's a long pause; the girl looks about ready to tear her hair out, before looking back at her tablet again, a faintly panicky look on her face.]

Is this normal?
