I have a question.  How do you know when someone is flirting with you?  I just do not understand flirting at all so I do not know how to recognize it.  Or how to even flirt.  It never really seemed like such an important thing.  But apparently it is?

I mean, for us sylvari we are blunt.  If we like someone we tell them.  We do not see a reason to beat around the bush, you could say.    But it seems to be a thing the other races do.

Now that depends entirely on the person! I'd still say it's kind of a stretch to say it's all that important. Some people just have that naturally friendly way about them that makes it really easy to slip into that sort of natural flirty back and forth. You know the type I mean! Flirting's fun, that's what it is. Not everyone thinks it's important! And in the end you kind of do need to tell someone you like them. The guessing game's fun for a while, but it usually doesn't go anywhere if no one takes the first plunge into directness!

I suppose it would be fun if you know how to flirt. But being direct from the start is just so much more simple.

Taicea, Taicea. People flirt for many reasons. How to tell, well, that all depends on the person doing the flirting.

There can be verbal clues, such as how pretty or handsome someone looks to more physical ones such as a light touch on the small of one's back, to a gentle lift to the chin. Usually, they are accompanied by gentle, yet persuasive words.

Then, there are some people that flirt who are not subtle at all. This could mean cat calls to lewd comments about one's body. As you had put it once before, they are generally a lot more blunt.

I'm definitely not an expert on the subject, but you'll want to look out for a few things.

Eye contact, making excuses to spend lots of time with you, affectionate touch, and compliments are some of the big ones. Friends do some of those things too, but they're probably flirting if the seem to focus excessively on you, or if they get flustered---but if they're confident they might not.

It's the furthest thing from an exact science that I know of, that's why I'm so bad at it.

Heh, from the way I've heard it told, flirting is mostly a human problem. Flirting's fun, yeah, but nothin' wrong with being upfront either.

It's not just humans in my world. The norn flirt too but I think they are more blunt about it. Often very physical in ways that could injure. [They're very physical when just being friendly too. She's been knocked over by a slap on the back before.]

If it helps, most people have trouble recognizing flirting when it's directed at them, even if we understand what flirting is.

If they're being more physically affectionate towards you than other people, or if they pay you more compliments, they're probably flirting.

Yes. If we like someone we find a direct way to tell them. Either by simply saying we have such an interest in them or through poetry or song. We so no reason play games.
