[It is a very solemn Giovanni who addresses everyone today. Maybe it’s due to the cold which, admittedly was a problem that even an extra wrap could not quite solve, but more likely it was due to the book on Renaissance history that was sitting open faced on his lap. He had finally found the time to read the book he had traded Cat (a.k.a. Arya Stark) for and the manuscript held a grim glimpse into the future. ]

We are brought here, told that changing the past is the way to correct the future but I find myself wondering if that is true. Has anything that has been done really been for the best? Those who were native in Exsilium before our arrival have been nearly entirely wiped from history. Instead of correcting the troubles with these ‘nuclear bombs’ we have only plunged the planet into a deep cold. Now we are told we must do more of these missions to gather supplies and correct these new problems. Does it ever end?

I wonder how many of you agree with this. Is changing the past in this manner something you feel is right?

[His voice took on an even softer tone as he thought back on what he had read. ]

What would you do if you had future knowledge of a terrible event? Would you journey to the past to stop it from happening or would you be too concerned it might cause something even worse to occur?

Before coming here, I'd probably jump on the chance to change a horrible future. Now, I'm not so sure.

I wonder if I would have. It is very tempting to take a chance like that when offered, but if it changes everything that comes after I do wonder if it helps or harms.

Probably a bit of both help and harm. You never know what the changes will do, and you can't know until you do it.

It is too unreliable. As tempting as it would be to change what I have discovered maybe it would be best to leave it alone.

You make a point. It is a sad flaw of human nature that people do not always do the correct thing even when they know what it is, but maybe some day they will come around to understand the necessity of this.

Eh, the correct thing depends on the times. It's easy to say what should have been done after we've seen the consequences. It's that pesky hindsight thing.

For some things, si, but other actions should be very obvious. One does not steal food from a child to make a profit or kill indiscriminately.

I can agree with that. I wasn't aware that we had stolen food from kids though, but it wouldn't surprise me without how little planning went into our trips through time. There isn't anything besides more time travel that can be done to fix it, and if we do that we didn't learn from the last time.

I do not know that we have directly, that was only meant as an example of something everyone should know as wrong. It is something I have seen in my own time.

I only mean to say our actions have directly affected people and we should be cautious about what we do. I even question time travel as the only option. It is the simplest one but I do not see it as the only way.

[There's a pause and then Blaine can't help but chuckle.]

Time travel being the simple way. That sounds so weird, especially since it's true at this point. It's because we don't have the manpower or intelligence needed to do this without using sneakier ways. Direct attacks will get us annihilated, as we've seen ourselves first hand.

There is a certain irony in that. I never thought I would be placed in a situation to consider time travel so easy.

Stealth missions are the only way to proceed in this situation, I have no question on that, it is just the element of time and altering timelines that I am unsure about. We might be able to spirit some supplies away from United Earth in the here and now... depending on what shape they are now in. If the island has changed the mainland may have as well.

That's a question we should get the answer to. What else has changed besides this city and the overall weather? Getting information from the locals isn't the most fun thing though, and the Initiative is so underground getting to talk to them is like pulling teeth. They... aren't held in 'high esteem' here.

[And understatement for the centuries, really.]

I have discovered they are far more open if they do not believe you are associated with the Initiative, but they do not seem to get out very much. Most of their concerns have been for finding food, supplies, and dealing with the wild beasts here.

[At least those were the concerns of the people had had been able to speak to. ]

There may be some who know more, but it might be best to discover the answers on our own.

Yeah, that's a discovery I made pretty quickly. I don't know how they won't be able to tell, since there are suddenly hundreds more people they've never seen before walking around. I don't think we have any other choice than to find out on our own.

It does seem odd they accepted so many travelers as easily as they did. It does make one wonder if visitors are common or not. Maybe the people here move often and so they think we just moved in from another area.

[It was only speculation though and really not worth much. ]

I can't think of a worse place to plan a massive moving expedition to, but I probably shouldn't say that because we'll end up there next.
