Why have we not returned to Exsilium? The danger is over, isn't it?

[Kili looks frustrated and tired. He's not used to being cooped up indoors like this, and no one can really blame a dwarf for not understanding radiation. and nuclear bombs.]

This place wasn't meant for living on. We can't even go outdoors! It doesn't feel like we're living anymore, merely... surviving.

And Kang, forgive me, but it seems it will be a while longer before I can continue with the blade my uncle forged you.

[Kili is far from being the only one tired and exhausted. Saori is sitting on her bed, with her cat Mana asleep on her lap.]

Unfortunately, the weapons they used on Exsilium is possibly the worst humanity has ever created. The detonation is horrible but the after effects are terrible.

To put into simple terms, they rendered Exsilium inhabitable for centuries to come. It's worse than salting the earth.

How is such a thing possible?

I'm not a scientist in away, but I'll do my best to explain. Basically, the materials inside the bombs released a kind of poison that the everything down there has now absorbed. It can basically break down the insides of living things, eventually leading to a slow and painful death. It does break down, but it would take several lifetimes for it to be safe for any living creature.

[A lot of scientists would probably be rolling in their graves by now.]

Heh. Yeah, I feel ya there, man. I've been on enough missions where they screwed somethin' up enough that I swore I'd never do 'em again. But ya know, I hate this base so friggin' much that I changed my mind. Even if I'm just off to visit a Costco to pick up a thousand rolls 'a toilet paper, it's better than bein' stuck on here all day.

We could go outdoors. [Fili greets Kili with that when he comes back to the room with some unappetizing moon food to hand over. He's rarely let Kili out of his sight over these past few weeks - hopefully, as warranted as it may be, it hasn't made being confined to this place even more stifling. He can understand Kili's frustration well. He can't do much to cheer him up, though.]

Not here, but... [This thought becomes less appealing whenever wariness overpowers it.] If they send us to a place where we can hunt, we could bring back fresher supplies.

[Kili's sitting on the bottom bunk, knees pulled up to his chest and apparently lost in thought. Mostly he's just...sulking. ]

Last time they sent Bri somewhere, she got killed. [He lets out a sigh.] I want to go home. Not even back on the quest, just...home.

[Fili flinches slightly, even though he knows what Kili means. To hide it, he looks at nothing in particular as he slides onto the edge of the bunk bed and rests his elbows on his knees. One hand scrubs over his jaw. No one is getting killed, that's what he want to say most of all, and they'll go home. (What if their home is in danger?) Of course they will, someday.]

The quest is taking us home, Kili. [Or it should, but it's not Erebor he thinks of as Kili speaks.] So we'll be on our way there, as soon as they let us go, just like Thorin. [Which hasn't become any less puzzling.]

[She feels your pain Kili. Even with the Sun, at least Exsilium had fresh air to breath. Even the rain was more tolerable than this.]

[Kili's brooding to himself a bit, at least until that last sentence from Celebrian. A rather startled laugh escapes him and his lips curve into a smile.]

Y'know sometimes, survivin' is all you can do. [She's keeping her tone even, not scolding or anything as she shifts, shakes her head.] The action might be over, but that place won't have anyone there for a while.

Not if that they wanna keep their face.
