Haven't you heard? On the moon, there's a rabbit who makes the elixir of immortality with mortar and pestle. Considering how hard human alchemists work for that, I think we should say that rabbit is smarter than even most human beings!

[Sigh. This must be another one of his whimsical stories. Not saying there couldn't still be something living on the moon, but--]

no. i didn't know that. but if the rabbits figured out how to live forever, wouldn't there be a huge colony of them? i don't remember seeing anything like that when we landed...

A young man was publicly saying hurtful things about moon rabbits. As a friend, I decided to stand in and correct his error.

[Only, he doesn't really get what's going on at all.]

[Following Christopher's train of thought has always been challenging. Sometimes the strangest things seem to offend him and in the next moment, he'll be cheerfully talking about another topic. But. Asbel really isn't sure where he went wrong here. He'd seemed so enthusiastic about it before... Friendship is something you share with others, right? Why would Christopher feel the need to be secretive about it?]

More important than even friendship is Mother Nature! In admiration of her whimsical and capricious ways, I've decided to emulate them and so become more in harmony with her great cycle of willfulness.

[More important than friendship? ~~What complete and total crap!~~ Well, "whimsical" is an accurate descriptor of Christopher's behavior in general. And he does seem to like flowers and such an awful lot. So, what, is he trying to say he'll be extra stubborn from now on?]

yeah. i suppose she is pretty important. hopefully someone will discover other life on the moon besides just us and the rabbits. it'd be a real shame if nothing else existed here, and besides, you'll find it easier to emulate her if she's able to do her best, right?

That's right! It's one thing if it's myself against Mother Nature, but I won't allow the cold, hard facts of reality counter her life-giving impulsive.

[Also. Just as that text was sent, Asbel's door just got slammed open.

[Asbel's in the middle of typing out a response when the door behind him flings wide. He leaps up and spins around defensively, dropping his device and sending a small black creature streaking under his discarded jacket.]

What do you--

--Christopher?!

[Staring blankly at his unexpected guest, Asbel finally remembers he's still in one of the fighting stances he learned during his training, and slowly straightens out of it.]

No, that's... [He shakes his head.] Nevermind. So, what brings you here anyway? Is everything all right?

[Chuckling, Christopher lets himself in, his attitude one of someone who wouldn't have been worried if Asbel had come right at him with a sword.]

My, what a prepared reaction! Tell me, did you grow up on the mean streets of New York?

Um. Nothing like that. I guess I've just been really jumpy lately... [Which is one way of putting the past few weeks.]

And actually, we don't have a New York back on Ephinea.

[Asbel frowns lightly, trying to ward off exhaustion, and attempts again:] So, what's up? Did you want to sit down?

Such hospitality, when I didn't even bring a gift to warm your home? I'm moved. [He perches on one of the tables. He smiles, fanged. He tilts his head.] Do you have milk and something sweet?

It's fine, Christopher. Given the current situation, I think we can let it slide.

[Asbel simply plops himself down on the floor Indian-style, scooting the device somewhere it's not as likely to get stepped on.]

Unfortunately, no. Sorry. [Unless Christopher is interested in snacking on kitty kibble, he has very little to provide.] But there might be something like that in the cafeteria?

[~~Did he come to ask for milk and a cup of sugar?~~ Well, Asbel's given up asking. For now. But he's still watching his friend with a look of mild concern.]

Ah, well. [Christopher hops to his feet again, so now he's standing in front of Asbel and looking down on him.]

[And then he claps his hands together loudly.] What a lazy approach! Now's no time to be resting! There are rabbits to be found in these hallowed halls!

[You're so weird, Christopher.]

Even if I could've brought some with me, it would've gone to waste by now...

[Asbel winces at the sudden noise and something else goes scuttling along the wall to dive under the nearest bunk.] Wait, what? You're hunting the base for rabbits? But I thought they lived outside somewhere.

[So it's because of the moon rabbits, then?]

[Christopher glances up.] Are you hiding a rabbit in your room? Asbel, this kind of betrayal is hard even for a friendship like ours to take!

[If there's one word he doesn't like, it's "betrayal". Asbel jerks back slightly, turning his head in that direction. Sure enough, a pair of eyes studies them beneath the bed.]

Oh. You mean those guys. Sophie and I adopted kittens from Sir Codpiece a while ago. They're...kind of like family now, and we couldn't just leave them behind. If a rabbit really was in here, they'd have let us know by now.

[...] Hey. So we're still friends, right?

[Oh, that certainly was a reaction. With that merry, mad smile of his, Christopher notices but doesn't say a word. Asbel responds badly to 'betrayal.' So be it. Christopher doesn't know why but he might learn, or he might not. it's important to accept everything about your friends.

He laughs at Asbel's question.] Ack! I'm injured that you think our friendship could be so easily ended!

[He sits very suddenly across from Asbel and he smiles him with wide and bloody eyes.] Regardless of any circumstances, I shall always call you a friend! Even if you murdered me in my sleep or hid a rabbit from me, I would still accept you as one of my very first of five hundred friends made in Exsilium.

H-hey! That's not what I think...!

[Asbel's eyes widen reflexively when Christopher practically appears in front of him, but otherwise he doesn't move from his spot on the floor. Christopher might not look or act like a normal human - for that matter, he might not even be one - but none of that matters to Asbel. Sometimes the guy really does make his head hurt, though.]

That's right... And you were the first friend I met here. [Oh boy, good times. He almost smiles at the memory.] I don't think my singing has improved any since then, though.

[~~Let's not even acknowledge that murder comment let's not.~~ Still, it's good to hear Christopher talking about friends and such again! Asbel mulls this over for about five seconds.]

I've got an idea! Why don't we make a friendship pact, Christopher?

[Christopher blinks at Asbel. Then, bashful as a teenager asked out on a first date, he smiles and looks down, laughing.]

My, a friendship pact with me? I'm moved. My heart itself has been touched. It's slightly out of place now. I'm going to suffer terrible heart complications. You should be more responsible with your offers of pacts. Tell me, how do we make a friendship pact?

[He did, of course, melodramatically drop to the ground in a mark of heart complications before sitting straight back up in Asbel's face to ask his final question, without a pause in his ramble.]
