[This is his first time addressing people in this fashion. While he’s used to presenting in front of groups at small info swaps in Sybak, this is a whole new experience. While there’s a smile on his face, he’s a little nervous. ]
This isn’t what I had in mind when I first set out to do field research. It’s quite interesting, in any case.
[A pause. He’s had time to settle in, albeit a short amount of time, and has a general idea of what’s been going on. Hearing about the recent bombs was especially unsettling, which is why he’s outside the living quarters just looking at his surroundings. He’s eager to help out in this new place, even if he's not sure where to start. The people here had been through a lot already. It was apparent even from a casual glance at the last posts.]
For the time being, I’d like to offer my services to help reconstruction efforts in any way I can. I’ve only just arrived, but I hope I can be of some use.
[His expertise is research over anything else so while he looks useless, he can at least put a band-aid on someone. Or give them a hug. Or hold a nail while someone whacks it with a hammer. Before he ends the chat, he appears to remember something and quickly asks: ]
Are the words Tethe’Alla or Sylvarant familiar to anyone here? If it’s not any trouble, I’d like to talk to you.

Re: [video]
Is a perfectly valid research topic but not at all what he expected to hear.
Note to self: Question Emil Later.]
Maybe you can redirect your efforts towards getting rid of all this rain.
[The bit of amusement in his voice isn't faked, at least. He'd like to not get poured on for a while.]
Perhaps. Though it would be difficult without Ratatosk's help. I'll certainly give it my best shot.
Ratatosk?
I apologize. Ratatosk is a summon spirit back on my world. His help is vital to restoring the climate to the way it was.
[He's not 100% sure on what Asch knows, but if he wants to know, hey, this he's a good person to ask. It's taking a lot of willpower to just not overwhelm him with information right away, especially since Aster pretty much generalized it down to Ratatosk, when it was really the centurions as well. So many things he wants to say.]
[Yeah, he doesn't have the first idea what that means. His game doesn't have any kind of summoning mechanic, what do you expect?]
[video] woooow i apologize for this tag
I suppose it's best to begin when they originated, which was from the source of all life, called mana, that came from the Kharlan Tree. After a war, the world was split into two with the summon spirits forming an invisible…bridge between them. The amount of available mana dropped considerably so through a process, the spirits allowed one to flourish with mana while the other lacked in it. They've been a vital part of the world for a long time.
Most of them deal with elements: ice, lightning, earth, darkness, light, wind, fire and water. Then there spirits of the world tree.
[A beat. He has to watch what he says about this. At least Asch has the basic of basics by now. WORLD UNIFICATION TOMFOOLERY can come another time. THIS IS AMAZING ASCH ISN'T IT? ]
Ratatosk is the spirit of the Kharlan tree itself and therefore has the ability to balance mana to a greater extent.
[Aster pauses for a moment and lowers his hand with a smile. Even though it's technically the centurions that do the whole balancing thing, Ratatosk is like their boss. Plus the centurions are a whole other deal. ]
They can be made artificially as well, but the process is...complicated.
[There isn't a word he can think of to describe it accurately from his perspective. He never personally took part in the experiments, but he had access to the files. The researcher in him was always happy to read the new information however, sometimes the experiments were borderline and certainly weren't ones he would have conducted himself.]
[video] no please continue
[Ignore him attacking the obvious, Aster, he's taking notes inside. Especially regarding the creation of artificial spirits, because, well, he knows that tone of complicated. It's probably running around in the rain somewhere picking up groceries.]
The fonon sentiences of Auldrant are similar in theory, but entities with that kind of power don't seem to exist in this world. If they were to arrive here, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to harness that kind of power with the right equipment - [After all, fontech wasn't hard in theory, and they did have Jade, specialty or not.] - but finding a power source on that level would be difficult.
[Aster's pleased at the way this conversation turned and it shows on his face. He's had bouts of excitement every so often after his arrival, but then it would change to guilt over leaving his world in such a precarious situation. Right now though, he can just concentrate on this. It's nice.
When Asch starts talking about his own world, he listens in and while his gaze drifts down, it's pretty apparent he's taking actual paper notes.]
If they have the power to transport people across time and between worlds, it's likely they have a similar power source. Whether it's mana or something entirely new. Can you imagine what it must look like? Or perhaps it has no tangible form at all.
[Either way, he's curious about dem fonons.]
If you don't mind, I'd like to hear more about the fonon sentiences.
AUGH MY INTERNET GAVE OUT AS I WAS POSTING THIS
[Because, you know, no one thought to ask the isofons. No, they had to wait until Tear went and got herself possessed.]
For the most part, they exist in the fon belt above the planet, where fonons layer throughout the upper atmosphere. Lorelei is an exception again, having been contained in the core of the planet for the past several thousand years.
no subject
[That does sound similar. Not exactly, but closer than he expected given the variety of different worlds here. The word 'contained' catches his attention most of all.]
Is there a reason Lorelei is separated from the rest?
no subject
Setting Lorelei loose of that containment was a side effect of halting the Planet Storm in order to halt the vibrations of the core that was liquifying the crust and causing the land to sink.
[Is that enough infodump for you, Aster?]

It sounds like Auldrant was under an enormous burden. The balance between energy and technology...it's extremely difficult to keep the two in check. We've had a similar issue on our world.
[ With the whole 'let's make magitechnology and have a war thing'. Not entirely the same, but Aster can see a few similarities there.
He loves this Asch never change you redheaded dumper of information.]
Were you able to find an alternative energy source to replace the Planet Storm?
[More curious about this perhaps since it could help them solve that whole crazy mana issue back on his world.]
no subject
Not as of my death.
[...Yeah, whoops.
Sadly we don't have any canon information about it, really...]no subject
haha. He feels bad for Asch and his tone is genuinely sympathetic.]...I'm sorry to hear that.
WELP LET'S THREADJACK AGAIN now with copious headcanon

[HAND TO CHIN THINK FACE.]
The most difficult part may be predicting future growth of populated areas along with the need for more power. Keeping the balance between the two will be critical.
Is there a reason they had to move away from that ancient technology and develop the Planet Storm to begin with?
[Their ancient technology is the do not use ever again range of things to consider. Haha, Magitechnology.]

Interesting. The book I examined indicated that mana originated from the Goddess Martel and argued to discredit legends regarding a tree as the source of mana. Has there been a recent change in opinion in the scientific community?
There's really no way to explain this with talking about the world reunification or being intentionally vague about it. Ah well, maybe he can just let a little info slide. It's for the sake of discussing science.]
That's correct. It's become more widespread due to various changes.
[LIKE IT ACTUALLY HAPPENING.]
The Church and their followers may still subscribe to that, but most believe the origin of mana to be the Kharlan tree.
[tell him of the science, emil. he wants to know the science]
Infodump time.]
It's not fully understood at this time, but there are a few factors to consider. Previously, Magitechnology used so much mana that the world tree was nearly killed in the process. Which shows the most important being that mana cannot be used quicker than it can be replenished. It must be recycled from somewhere or whatever is left of that expanded mana creates the base for the world tree to begin the cycle again. I suppose it's like air in that way.
The summon spirit Ratatosk may be able to provide a complete analysis since it was the guardian of the Kharlan tree.
[Missed opportunities man. Aster doesn't quite sigh, but he's obviously disappointed.]
My partner and I were actually speaking to him before I was brought here.
[Not that it was going well but uh. Still. Let's pretend. ]
Unfortunate that the information was cut short. A cyclical structure does seem reasonable to assume from that data. Is there any evidence to suggest that the mana linkages that the summon spirits formerly formed [thanks for explaining that bit of the plot btw he was missing it] is similar or related to the function of the Kharlan tree?
Along with keeping the worlds in a state of give and take, the links formed by summon spirits also protected what was left of the Kharlan Tree-the Great Seed. They offered a way of balancing out the mana between the worlds.
[Now Aster wasn't around for this part, so he takes a second to reflect on what he knows about it. Mostly through the grapevine stuff and from researching on his own. So enjoy more plot Jade. ]
When the mana links were split, the Kharlan Tree went out of control and required a large burst of mana from the summon spirits to re-stabilize it. The spirits, or similar beings with influence over mana, are necessary to the function of the world tree so it will never be overwhelmed or underwhelmed by the mana around it.
Is anything known about how Summon Spirits come to exist?
Summon spirit doodles.
Ratatosk might be difficult though.]
There is a lab in Meltokio that specializes in the creation of summon spirits and there has been one successful attempt. However the artificial process and natural process of forming summon spirits have their differences. As you can imagine, more is known about the artificial method.
