[This is his first time addressing people in this fashion. While he’s used to presenting in front of groups at small info swaps in Sybak, this is a whole new experience. While there’s a smile on his face, he’s a little nervous. ]

This isn’t what I had in mind when I first set out to do field research. It’s quite interesting, in any case.

[A pause. He’s had time to settle in, albeit a short amount of time, and has a general idea of what’s been going on. Hearing about the recent bombs was especially unsettling, which is why he’s outside the living quarters just looking at his surroundings. He’s eager to help out in this new place, even if he's not sure where to start. The people here had been through a lot already. It was apparent even from a casual glance at the last posts.]

For the time being, I’d like to offer my services to help reconstruction efforts in any way I can. I’ve only just arrived, but I hope I can be of some use.

[His expertise is research over anything else so while he looks useless, he can at least put a band-aid on someone. Or give them a hug. Or hold a nail while someone whacks it with a hammer. Before he ends the chat, he appears to remember something and quickly asks: ]

Are the words Tethe’Alla or Sylvarant familiar to anyone here? If it’s not any trouble, I’d like to talk to you.

[Whoa, what? He had stopped on this video because he thought it was Emil- but what in the world was he talking about? And that name on the side of the entry- Aster? Where has he heard that before?]

[But he'll answer, at least with voice. The name on his is "Kaneis Major"]

Em-- huh?

[She stops and scans over the entry. What... the fuck? That is clearly Emil but that is clearly not Emil's name... She has the feeling she's met him before, on top of that-- pinged mostly by his manner of speaking.]

I'm from Tethe'alla, too. That's a Sybak uniform, isn't it?

Emil? [It doesn't... seem like Emil. Emil'd been here since at least May, when he met him, and from the way the guy had talked, even longer. Besides, did Emil even act like that?]

...'s brother?

[For a minute, Asbel thinks this is Emil posting. But wait... This can't be him, right? He said he just got here. And so the young man on the other end of the feed is likely wearing a confused expression at first as he scratches the back of his neck.]

Sorry, I don't know a whole lot about it myself, but one of my friends is from Tethe'alla.

[He offers a smile.]

Um. Are you looking for your brother by any chance? I actually met him a while ago.

[No. Way.

Well, someone's going out as little as possible today.]

[While Aster wouldn't wish anyone to be dragged into this, he can't help to feel at ease knowing there are others from his world around. It makes the transition feel much smoother. Maybe later on he can ask this guy about the state of affairs in their world.]

My name is Aster. I'm a student at Sybak. Where are you from?

Sybak, huh. Well, nice to have another from our world.

[He tries to think if he remembers that name from his days there- hmmm nope. Not a clue. And he thinks about what answer he should give but eh- Meltokio is a huge city so-]

I'm from Meltokio, but I travel a lot.

Yes, it is.

[There's a slight pause as he takes a moment to study her face. Hasn't he seen her? She hadn't been a student in Sybak and he can't recall her being in the towns he visited with Richter. ]

I feel like I've seen you before now and your name...

[He double checks it quickly, rereading her name a couple times until it finally hits him.]

I remember now! You were at the Elemental Research Laboratory at one point, weren't you?

[That's weird. Who is Emil? Surely no one he has to worry about and only has the smallest possible resemblance to. Right? Right.]

I'm an only child. You must be confusing me with someone else.

[The only reason he could place why this guy looks confused is maybe the same reason some people are mistaking him for this Emil person.]

You don't have to apologize for that. If you don't mind me asking, who is your friend? I have met a couple people from Tethe'alla so far.

[Even if this guy doesn't want to give out a name, it's enough to know that there are people from the world here. Multiple people, even. Hopefully they can work together to get out of this mess and learn the nature of this world. ]

...I'm afraid I don't have a brother. Was the person you met Emil?

[He pauses to wonder if he's going to get another "it's complicated" answer like he got from the redheads of Abyss, but then he's shaking his head.]

Oh... m-maybe. That's probably it! I'm sorry, you really looked like him so I was wondering why... You're new, huh?

Are you a construction worker?!

I've been there a few times myself. Although I only ever went to the Elemental Research Laboratory.

[Since he travels, Aster wonders how much of the world he saw and when he saw it. It's safe to assume they all didn't just pop up here from around the same time. Depending on whether or not he was before or after the unification, the answer could be very different. If Kaneis was from a future version of their world, Aster might be able to pinpoint some mistakes to fix in his research from this answer. It's the closest he can get to picking back up from where was and he will certainly take it.]

If you don't mind more questions, where did you travel to? What was their state like?

Ah...think I've heard of it, never been.

[a pause. what sort of question is that?]

All over. Last place I remember was Flanoir. [Well, second to last but let's not say Tower of Salvation] It seemed well enough- snowy. Why?

[With every comment about this Emil person, he feels more of an urge to check it out himself. Hopefully he'll show up soon so he can get a look at him, but if he doesn't this time, Aster is sure they'll meet soon.]

It's alright. You don't have to apologize. I'm afraid I can't answer why for you. I haven't met him yet.

[Note the yet. That's a little better than a 'it's complicated' answer yeah? Just a 'he doesn't know but he's gonna sure find out' one. ]

That's right. I arrived here a short time ago. Have you been here long?

I've never done construction work before.

[Aster laughs quietly at that. Yeah, no. ]

Still, if it's needed I'd be happy to lend a hand.

[Get stuck in the cement and die, but he'd try dammit!]

Hm...

[There's a pause as he writes something down. It looks like he may have to come out and say it. The last thing he wanted to do was freak someone out about the impending world unification if he wasn't there yet, especially since prejudice was still strong in tethe'alla. He didn't know Kaneis well enough to be sure it wouldn't bring up some animosity just yet.]

It's for our research. Well, my partner's and mine. There were some drastic climate changes in many cities, so we were attempting to resolve them.

Drastic climate changes?

[Well that's the first he's heard of that- just what is going on in his world? He nearly asks but- he stops himself with the reminder that he was dead. What happened in Tethe'alla was no longer his concern. Learning about the future seemed to only make things worse for him here]

...You might be in a time ahead of mine. There's been no climate changes that I know of and I only heard about Sylvarant when I came here.

[A lie, but whatever it makes things easier]

Then you've probably met him already. His name's Kaneis.

[And he most likely wouldn't call Asbel here a friend, but he's giving him the benefit of a doubt anyway.]

Oh. [Asbel looks surprised.] Well, yeah, it was. The two of you look so much alike, I thought you might be brothers...

[He's still not sure the two of them aren't related somehow. If not, then this is a really amazing coincidence.]

But you know each other, right?

[So they're not even acquainted. This must be the infamous Identical Stranger thing. Wow. Even their hair is similar.]

Not that long, but I guess I wouldn't say it's been short, either. I've been here for a couple months, now.

[pause. then, !!!!] I-I'm sorry, my name is Kisaragi. Shintaro Kisaragi.

Yes, that seems to be the case.

[Then he offers a quiet, light hearted laugh.]

I was about to say that it must have been surprising for you to learn about a world so close to our own, but since you were already here I imagine it wasn't too shocking at that point.

[Aster isn't about to admit that he hoped Kaneis was from the future. It could have been an eye opening moment to see either the fruits of their labor or fix avoidable mistakes. While Aster knew the main focus of his life would be this world for quite some time, he still can't take his mind off the seconds before he got here. Their world was in trouble, even without the meddling that came from this world. If only he could get a message to Richter somehow.

Annnnd it occurs to him that he spent a little too much time thinking. Maybe he shouldn't randomly zone out during a phone call. That'd be nice.]

I apologize. I lost myself for a moment.

Heh...yeah. Just glad I'm a guy who takes things as they come.

[To say the least. But wow, did that guy really zone out on him? ...Does he do that when he gets lost in his own exposition? Weird.]

It's no problem, I've been here about oh...seven months?

[It's a very common disease, especially in Tales Of Land. Clones and replicas everywhere.]

A few months can seem like a long time when you're far from home. Where were you from?

I have. He seems like a nice person.

[From the few words he's exchanged so far with him. It's nice enough to have someone to talk to from home.]

Do we? I'll have to look him up.

[That's interesting. He doesn't have any secret brothers or much in the way of extended family. While he took the news with humor and slight curiosity at first, something doesn't seem quite right about that. Aster doesn't have to hesitate at the last question. He's never met someone like that.]

No. I've traveled often, but I've never come across someone named Emil or anyone that looks like me before.

That outlook would be useful here. There seem to be a lot of surprises.

[Think of it as a skit that freezes severely during a gameplay. The only choice is to wait it out or lose your save. HE OVERTHINKS OKAY.]

Have you had a chance to visit the library?

[He's gonna head there soon himself, but it's like he's about to visit a theme park. It's important to know where all the best rides are.]
