[text] Danny's Manifesto
Hear Ye, Hear Ye, or some such crap.
I'm a cop, I've been very upfront about that since day one. So, this is an issue near and dear to my heart.
As far as I can tell, there is no such thing as law enforcement here. In fact, I'm not even sure we have laws. The closest is the Initiative themselves and I wouldn't trust them with my daughters pet hamster, let alone fair law enforcement.
I know we have enough transports here that are not only experienced in their world's version of police work, but would probably be willing to do it here. That's not the question. We have the manpower. The question is should we and how? Logistics, it's always fucking logistics isn't it?
First off, if we form our own police, where do we put the criminals?
Secondly, what do we enforce? Are there laws here? Hell if I know.
Thirdly, will the Initiative even allow it?
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm tired of living in the fucking Wild Wild West only worse because at least the West had people that tried. As crap as it often was. So talk, yell at me, something, but at least start thinking about it. Because if we're here for the long haul, at least we can make things bearable here right?

I haven't heard that one yet.

Are you even on the same planet as I am right now? Or are you just willfully blind?

We'll we'd be better than nothing. I'd also hope we'd recruit some of the natives? I'd have no problem with that except for training issues. No one wants to get shot by a scared rook you know?

I've heard that the Initiative might have someway to block memory, but something like that... Why weren't the transports affected?

We'd have to do a census, I'd suppose; see how many transports and how many natives are here and, more importantly, where all the transports are from--it'd be a real spanner in the works if you encountered a lot of people who have no concept of, say, thievery. There are others, I'm sure, who'd believe themselves above any sort of law because of the power they wield. [sigh] Multispecies locations are notoriously difficult to police.
no subject
Yeah, multi-species, and I thought the native vs. Haole crap back home was bad. This'll be worse. I think I'd be happy with the basics at this point, Murder, rape and thievery, lets start there and work out? I don't know. I was just throwing this out there.

It's not a bad idea, really. Any population of this size is going to need some kind of internal policing. [a beat] I'm told we've a few lawyers here, it might be a good idea to start with them, draw up some sort of a constitution? This place is about as sovereign as it gets in this part of the timeline.

And here I thought this place wasn't ruled by anarchy yet because people are actually able to use their common sense.
Anyway, you might have a point. We've got lawyers around, I'm sure they'd be able to draft something and set it up. Your main problem's gonna be if the Initiative will be swell with anything we might come up with.
voice
Ugh, lawyers.
voice
And no matter what you might think of lawyers, they're quite useful. Especially when it comes to taking care of all the boring office work stuff.
voice
The lawyers did the paperwork? Heh, ours just show up and demand shit and then get in the way of witness interviews.

We have prosecutors though. I hear one of them is researching the local laws.
Placing the criminals may be discussed later, once there's enough information and if the Initiative says yes.

However, considering the state of this whole world, it may be easy to find evidence that something needs to be done to help make it better for everyone around.

So, what, you a superhero then?

You're joking, right?
Re: video
No I'm not, and unless you plan on being helpful I suggest you go run away and get drunk with the other 20 somethings.

Did all that earlier today, love. Not nearly as entertaining as watching you boys try and organize yourselves. You're going to need one hell of a lot more than wishful thinking to get a system going, especially considering just what kind of people the Initiative likes to drag in.
no subject
[Yeah, you just got put on Danny's suspicious list. Good job there.]

The whole point of this is to fight a war, and yeah, some of us aren't exactly equipped for combat, but the others-- well, from what I've seen, they're certainly a cut above your average shoplifter. And if I were you, I wouldn't be diving head first into those waters.
God knows I don't plan on it.
Text
Also, as big a fan I am of self starters, who decides who gets to make the laws?
Re: Text
That's a good question. I don't know though. I just enforce the damn things.
Text
And you might want to think about who you want to be in charge of it, if you want to be the one enforcing it.
no subject
So, it's up to us to take care of ourselves.
It would be nice to have something in place to stop people from deciding on their own form of justice.
[Like cutting people's hands off as punishment for vandalism...]

We would have to construct a jail of some sort as well as the security force to guard it - a difficult task, consisting some transports' capabilities. [ as to how they're capable of them, Edgeworth doesn't even want to talk about that right now. ] As for the Initiative, I'd say it was in their interest to ensure that their army doesn't destroy itself, and for this, we need laws. I don't like it, but we'll have to work in accordance with their goals. For as things stand currently, the only real rules is that we have to work with the Initiative. They are the rulers of this land. Unless we were strong enough for an uprising and capable of sending ourselves home, this is not the time to attempt a complete takeover.
I personally think a good starting point for a draft set of laws would be with the very fundamental basics of human rights - or 'sentient being rights' as it would be here. [ He's still finding it hard to believe, but he supposes he must consider the feelings of the robots and mythological creatures, too. ]
