[ He's missed you for years, dad, but man... So maybe he jumped the gun and got a little excited and hopeful and stupid, but everything turned out good in the end, right? Of course, he can't say that, even he's not that stupid.

Also ouch, at least the point from which his dad is became clear. Dean actually winces at that. ]

This place is different. People gone at home show up all the time here. [ Like Jo just did. ] I was bein' careful, and I came prepared. [ He has his gun. ]

[ Uuurrrgh. But Dean just nods, figuring it best to go along with this than anything. Now he knew the question about Sam would come up eventually, he's been dreading it, but nothing can quite prepare him for it anyway. ]

[It's like a getting punched in the gut. He knew, somewhere inside he knew. If Sam was here...he would answer his call. Sam was too smart to miss the code, he didn't even make it hard on them.]

Alone?

[Sam can't be alone; someone has to have their eye on him at all times - Dean has to have an eye on him at all times. He knows damn well what could happen.]

No, I think time doesn't move there when we're here-- so he'd be with me, in a way, and Bobby. [ And Castiel the enemy angel working with Crowley. 8( ]

I saw him though, in a different place sometime ago-- before coming here. He was fine. [ That's reassuring, right? ]

[That's not good enough. He has to find a way out of here for Dean. Sam needs Dean. He frowns at the second part.]

A different place? What do you mean, another world like this one?

[ Hesitating. ] Yeah, sorta. A place called Attollo. I, uh... [ Was there for a year, oops. ] There time wouldn't move back home either. Seems to be a common thing with all of these, uh, alternate universes.

[For a moment he's actually lost for words.

How long have you been jumping from world to world.

[There is an obvious undertone of anger laced in his voice. Anger at the world, at whatever's doing this, and at Dean for being unable to defeat it and go back to his brother.

He puts too much on his shoulders, yes. But Dean never failed him, not once.]

[ Well shit.

Everything that's happened, it's nothing Dean is proud of. A sigh. ]

For a while. I mean, it's only been this place and the other, before that I was back home. [ He's so tired of it all. But a lot of good has happened too, like now with John. And things with Cas. And seeing Jo again. ]

Everything is okay, you have to trust me, dad. Sam is fine.

[He wants to trust him, but how can he know if he's not with his brother? He sighs.]

We should get out of the street, discuss this in private.

Yeah. [ A quick nod. ] Just -- follow me, you can come back to my place. Should be empty right now.

[ Or if it isn't, he'll force the others to leave yeah right. Dean gestures for his dad to follow. ] This way.

[He doesn't bother replying to any of it, just starts walking alongside his son.]

How long has it been? [He assumes he doesn't need to clarify. He's a little nervous to think of the time that's passed since...since his passing. But he needs to address the issue.]

[ Oooooh boy. He tries, but can't look at his dad when he speaks up. ]

A while. [ Beat. ] About six-ish years. [ What with having spent a year with Lisa and Ben, then being trapped in Attollo... It's been a long time. ]

[Six years. He was not prepared for this answer. He wants to know all that happened during these years, but he can't ask any of his questions until they reach a safe place.]

Is Sam -- is he ok? [He can't bear to wait on that one. He's feared for his youngest since he was a child. The dread he died with however still overwhelms him. He's alive, so much is obvious from the way Dean talks about him. But that doesn't mean he's well.]

Sammy is fine. [ And Dean is a lying liar who lies. But he only feels a little bad about it, because his dad only just arrived and everything he already knows has to be a little overwhelming, right? He doesn't want to add to it, not yet. ]

[John wasn't the best of fathers, no one one argue that, least of all him. But if there's one thing he knows in the world - it's his boys. Dean especially. He's done a lot of lying when it was just the two of them, about being ok, about not minding it.

He knows when he's lying and a lie in this particular subject makes him assume the worst.

He keeps quiet for the rest of the way.]
