( there's a slight sound of rustling after the feed clicks on, as oz makes himself more comfortable on a seat in the observatory. why he's there late at night — night by circadian rhythms, anyway, simulated nights on the moon — is anyone's guess, or maybe it's obvious enough. in any case, when he speaks up a moment later, he sounds to be in a good enough mood. )

What's your favorite story? Scary ones are probably best for late at night, but what I really want to hear about are everyone's favorites. For instance, something about a princess and a dragon, or maybe a mystery with a twist ending, or something out of history....ah, if you make it up or adapt it from a book, that's fine too! Or even if it's a real one that's happened to someone you know, ( and a light laugh ) — don't worry, I don't tell anyone!

But it's rude to ask without giving my own preference, right? I can start with mine, if anyone wants.

Then he got found by a Yeti and a talking Snowman.

A Yeti?

Think big, tall, lots of white fur, and a face like a monkey! It was a very lonely Yeti, and he was pretty smart as far as Yeti's went. Except Rudolph and the Snowman got scared, since they'd heard Yeti's were really mean! So they ran away from the Yeti as fast and far as they could! So fast and far, in fact, that they came to the edge of the land. The Yeti was still following them, trying to explain he wasn't planning to hurt them, but they were scared! They didn't know that, and as they stood on the cliffs over the water, Rudolph thought long and hard about how they were getting out of this pickle alive!

[velveteened]

So Yetis aren't mean, but he couldn't tell them, and they think they're in a lot more trouble than they are!

( gosh. )

Yeah! He wasn't mean at least, they never really got to spend time with other Yeti's to say if they liked more trouble than he did. Anyway, Rudolph had his best thinking cap on, and he knew, just like all the other young reindeer knew, that he had the power to fly somewhere in him. They needed it, to pull Santa's sleigh! And even if he thought he'd never get that honor, he'd still be able to fly.

He concentrated hard, and he wished with all his heart, and then he asked the snowman to climb on his back. Just as the Yeti got back in sight of them, Rudolph raced to the edge and threw himself into the air!

[velveteened]

And he flew?

After he'd started to fall! Then it was like the air under him grew solid, and Rudolph was running out over the sea! Can you imagine?

( rhetorically asked, with a shake of her head to follow. )

He didn't stop running until he hit inland of the shore on the island they'd both seen, thinking at last! The Yeti couldn't follow them there. Really, the Yeti just knew a different way to get to the island, and determined to tell them about their mistake and apologize for scaring them, the Yeti was headed off that way to catch up later.

But they didn't know that, so they started looking for someplace to spend the night.
