( there's a slight sound of rustling after the feed clicks on, as oz makes himself more comfortable on a seat in the observatory. why he's there late at night — night by circadian rhythms, anyway, simulated nights on the moon — is anyone's guess, or maybe it's obvious enough. in any case, when he speaks up a moment later, he sounds to be in a good enough mood. )

What's your favorite story? Scary ones are probably best for late at night, but what I really want to hear about are everyone's favorites. For instance, something about a princess and a dragon, or maybe a mystery with a twist ending, or something out of history....ah, if you make it up or adapt it from a book, that's fine too! Or even if it's a real one that's happened to someone you know, ( and a light laugh ) — don't worry, I don't tell anyone!

But it's rude to ask without giving my own preference, right? I can start with mine, if anyone wants.

The same! So it won't be hard to think of a good story to tell you.

Why don't you go first?

So, there was once a very small kingdom ringed by a huge forest. It was so big that nobody even knew how far out it went or what was there on the outside — or if there even was an outside! Some people were fine with not knowing, but the prince of the kingdom was as brave as he was curious, so after he came of age he decided to go on an expedition to find out for himself. His parents wept and asked him not to go, and I think it's understandable, because he was their only son, and if something happened to him, what were they going to do? But he said, "Please try not to worry. I'm not going anywhere with any intentions of losing my life." He was so insistent that in the end he got his way and rode off into the forest on a beautiful white horse.

[Listening, and nodding-]

What did this prince meet, while he was out there?

[There's a hint of quiet rage, a paper crumpling, at the word prince, but Kell keeps it down. Not here, not now.]

Nothing! — or, lots of animals. Some were friendlier and some wanted to eat him, but that's pretty normal, right? There weren't any horrific monsters or anything, which was a relief! So he journeyed on and on, surviving on his supplies and what he could glean from the forest, until he finally reached the other side. And out there — was a thin strip of beach and a huge, glittering ocean. He'd seen rivers and lakes, but never an ocean before, so he was really in awe.

[Knights wouldn't have warmed him up. In Kell's world, every man is usually out for himself.]

[And there are very few fairy tales.]

No horrific monsters! [He laughs, wondering what would happen if there was a mature mistwraith around.] What did he do when he was at the ocean? Did he find a ship?

Even better! ( conspiratorially: ) He found a beautiful maiden, with hair that glistened even more brightly in the sunlight than the ocean. And when he took a closer look, he realized she was half fish.

[A long pause. There isn't a large variety of animals where he's from, and the reference throws him off.]

Half... fish?
