[ Video opens on Roslyn at her desk in the police office, well dressed as she holds up her badge in front of her for a little bit before placing it back down on the desk. The office is small and cramped and clearly actively in use by the piles of folders, even if they're neatly stacked and arranged. ]

Some time ago, the police force was unfortunate enough to lose Inspector Barnaby, Sergeant Howe, and Sergeant Calhoun back to their homes. Their service was appreciated and will be missed.

In their absence, I am currently assuming the reigns as Detective Chief Inspector of the Transport Affairs Unit. I wanted to reassure the population that the police will continue to operate with integrity and dedication. Should you ever require our services, we can be found at [ address & ooc link ].

For those of you considering joining the force, we are always welcoming new recruits and the pay is reasonable. Serving as an officer is a way to help mend the fences between us and the natives and earn a living. Thank you for your time.

I see no reason you shouldn't be able to do desk work and training until you turn 18. It means that at that point you'll be ready for active duty.

[ A brisk nod, even if he can't see it. ]

If you're willing to accept those terms, you can join.

[ he thinks for a bit--really thinks. because riku is restless, and he always has been, and desk work sounds... boring, but it must be necessary. duty comes with responsibilities he might not like, but that doesn't mean it's any less important. and active duty would probably require it, too. he takes in a deep breath, and when he speaks, he speaks with a smile in his voice. ]

I can accept that.

[ That's actually quite a nice feeling. It will be interesting to have him working under her, but good. She thinks it will be good. ]

Then come by the station for the paperwork and we'll get you started.

[ it doesn't take riku too long to stop by; he's a little hesitant, a little shy, even if he's been here a few times before for sergeant calhoun. mostly as a child, but he'd stopped by every now and then to check up on her, whether to share a lunch or after having gotten hot chocolate (or a mocha).

even so, when he peeks in, he mostly does it in an unassuming manner, looking for sign of roslyn. ]

[ The signs for the transport affairs division point to an open room in the back right of the building, cubicles and tables scattered across it and two offices nestled in the back.

The door to Roslyn's is open and she looks up when she hears him, gestures for him to come on in. ]

Riku. How are you?

[ riku relaxes a bit at seeing her, following her gesture to come into the office in the back. ]

As good as I can be. [ he shifts the cruiser on his shoulder--it's the one tamora left behind. ] At least, right now. How about you? How's the new position?

As I can be is an interesting qualifier. [ Considering as she leans back in her chair and watches him. ] Good. Time consuming, but I appreciate the work. There'll be some paperwork.

[ his shoulders lift with a helpless smile. 'as i can be' is all that fits, at the moment. ]

Time consuming's probably good, in this case.

Right, paperwork. [ slight grimace. he kind of liked that whole bit about being a mystical defender of multiple worlds... there was no paperwork involved. ]

Do you think so? Not getting bored, are you?

[ And then, with a faint smile. ] It is inevitable when the law is involved. And necessary. We'll have to draw something up in regards to you being underage as well, I suspect.

[ riku gives her a modest smile when she asks if he's bored. this would be the kind of thing john would probably sigh at him about. ]

That's okay. [ he nods simply. ] I don't know how to prove it, but... I get it. Paperwork's a big part of this.

I was thinking more simply a signed agreement that you will not leave desk duty until you have turned 18. I think that will be sufficient.

[ Holding out a few sheets of paper. It's really not that much, in the end. ] Fill these out and I'll talk to our legal department about the other thing later.

Sounds fair.

[ there's a little smile to his face again.

he's always liked that roslyn seemed to keep things simple. taking the papers into his hand, he looks them over before nodding, searching his pockets for a pen. ]

[ she pulls one from the cup on her desk and holds it out to him, turning back to her own paperwork in the meantime. ]

Why do you want to do this? [ idly curious, mostly. ]

[ he's already starting before she asks the question--he pauses and flicks his eyes up to her, while not moving his head. ]

Was that a survey or a personal question?

Personal question. You don't have to answer if you don't want to.

I want to.

It's my duty to protect people. No one knows what a Keyblade Master is, though--and I don't have the kind of powers I would here, because the ties to the worlds are all cut off. I want to do what I'm supposed to do.

Besides... [ quiet. ] Sergeant said that I should try it, when I was old enough.

You're very young to feel that much of a sense of duty.

[ glancing up. ] Sergeant Calhoun?

[ he exhales; his bangs blow up with his puff of air. ]

I guess I am.

[ before, he would've been more hotheaded with that fact brought up. but now... he's sort of realized how strange it is. riku wants very little besides the assurance that his friends are all safe and sound. his room is still bare from when he moved in, with nothing but basic necessities. his clothes are plain and worn. he doesn't get new things, even when he has the marques for them. the things he has that are functionless are from friends.

nothing matters as much as making sure everyone--his friends, his acquaintances, and the rest of exsilium--is safe. it's a losing battle, but he'd never want to stop fighting it. ]

Is it bad, being this young?

[ but at that question--he tilts his head to the side. ]

Yeah. We were friends.

[ she shakes her head slowly, considers. ]

Not bad. In a situation like this, not preferable. We tend to want to guard our young. [ a slight lift of her shoulders as if to say, but that's not possible. ] Give them happier live.s

[ ah. she nods seriously. ]

She seemed like a good person. I'm sorry.

Then... [ riku's eyes drift down. ] is it okay to want to do the same for people younger than us?

It's always all right to want to help people, Riku. [ her attention fully on him now. ] But in the ideal situation, there would be adults to do it or it wouldn't need doing at all.

[ he directs his eyes up to her, head tipped down a little, before looking back down. ]

Can't deny that.

Of course, this is hardly an ideal situation. But - [ she presses her lips together. ] People still want to be able to protect others.
