[ It takes a bit of shaking the thing about. Despite the tutorial, this is so different to Edmund that he can't seem to fully grasp it at once. He eventually seems to get that it's recording, though, and the shaking stops. ]

Oh - it's on. Good. I was starting to think I'd broken it.

Um, hello. While a great deal of things have certainly been explained to me, and I'm doing my best to try and catch up on it all, I did have a question I was hoping people might be able to answer for me.

Have you come across anyone with the last name "Pevensie"? I'm looking for my brother and sisters. Or even just one of them, maybe. Lucy? Are you here?

[ He's not used to world jumping without her and he's hopeful she'll get the message. He presses his lips together a little more roughly, trying not to convey too many of his nerves and keep up a mostly regal appearance. ]

I haven't. But there's lots of times where one person comes after another. Besides-- it might be better to be without your siblings.

Yeah? So it's not the sort of thing where people from one world would arrive all together? That's good to know.

I'm not used to being anywhere without at least one of them. Peter would be a bit miffed if he knew I was off doing this sort of thing alone, at the least.

Well, if you're lucky, you'll go home soon and he won't have to know.

[He shrugs.]

I dunno. Some people like their mates. Some people get real scared and protective over em. Depends what sorta person you are.

I guess I'm not the sort for the latter. I mean, I'd be scared for them, sure, but they can hold their own.

You've fought inna war before?

A few of them at this point, yeah.

A few, well, scuze me, I didn't know I were talkin' to an expert here.

Not the sort of thing that usually comes out in small talk, is it? I'll forgive it this once, I s'pose. [ There's a mock sort of exasperation in that sarcasm there, yes there is. ]

[He flashes a grin, only slightly tired and false.]

Poor little war hero. I'm, uh, a little indisposed right now, but pretend I'm bowin' and scrapin', yeah?

I'll try my best to utilize my imagination.

Good man. What weapon did you pick?

A sword. S'what I'm used to, so it seemed an easy enough choice.

When you from?

Er -- well, to be honest, that's a bit complicated.

[ Well, at least it won't sound as crazy given the circumstances, right? Right. He takes a deep breath. ]

Originally, I'm from Earth - London, 1940s, to be all specific. But by accident, not too much different than now I suppose, I ended up in another world called Narnia which had technology that was more akin to the Middle Ages. That's where I fought in all the wars I've been in. I was the best swordsman in the whole Empire, they said, but - well, dunno how much that might've been exaggerated.

[He whistles, low and vaguely impressed-- but that sounds familiar. Narnia, that rings a bell, and he tilts his head.]

How long you stay in Narnia for?

About fifteen years or so the first time. Only a few months the second and third.

And what, you didn't get no older?

Oh, no, we all aged. It's just when I ended up back in London, I went back to being a kid again, right where we left off.

And you remembered it all? I mean, you must, if . . .

[a beat. He adds, uncertain:]

You ever been anywhere else?

[ He shakes his head slowly. ]

No - just Narnia.

[A fleeting little smile, but now Jack looks horribly distracted.]

Maybe I'm thinkin' o' somebody else, then. Me brain's got a mind o' it's own, you know?

I think everyone's brain tries to play tricks on them now and then.

[Thank god. Jack's not going to say anything until he's absolutely sure-- and even then, perhaps not.]

So, uh-- you ever used a gun before? Cuz I figure, well, if you're so hot at a sword, maybe you teach me, and I'll teach you how to use me gun. I mean, I know they offer lessons all officially, but. I'd rather from somebody I know.
