[ She was bored. So very bored. She wasn't training, because that's what they wanted from her, and the last thing Merida wanted to do was satisfy the people who wanted her to fight for them. She wouldn't do it. She wouldn't! And that was the end of it.

However, this didn't leave her with much to do. She wandered the city, even explored a bit of the Outlands, but she didn't go far. She was daring, but she wasn't stupid. She knew this world was dangerous, and she didn't want to lose her head without a good reason.

So she finally takes the painstaking time to learn to use the strange device she had been given upon her arrival. It took her plenty of attempts to get it working properly, and even when she does, there are several segments of very brief footage of the redheaded princess growling at her tablet in frustration. ]

Oi, is it working now? About time. [ She clears her throat. ] I want someone to tell me more about the land outside this city. [ It was much too crowded, too cluttered here. She wanted a freer space. ] A good place to explore, t'actually, you know, move around - that's what I'm lookin' for. How do you even stand it in this city?

[ She taps her chin. ] An' while you're at it, tell me what you do around here t'keep busy. I'm goin' out of m'mind.

[He drums his fingers on the table he's got his tablet sitting on.]

I been out to the outskirts, but if you get too far out there's something out there that can make you real sick. Radiation, y'know. Make your hair fall out, that kinda stuff. So if you go, don't stay too long. It's not bad, there's some animals that might be kinda scary.

[ She did remember him, even if it took her a moment to recall the name. Kousuke, wasn't it? Definitely not a name she'd heard before coming here. ]

Aye. Things have gotten a bit quieter since then.

[ Honestly, she's not sure whether that's a good or bad thing. ]

Believe me, I can handle 'scary animals'. What's radiation look like? [ So she can avoid it. ]

[His smile broadens.]

Yeah, thank goodness.

[He makes a constipated face. He knows a lot about old shit, but not a lot about nuclear shit.]

Uh, well you can't really see it. Or feel it, usually. It's one of those crazy things that people discovered and decided to try to mess with. You're from, like, the past, right?

[ It takes her a moment to understand his question, before remembering her conversation with Kate - she was from an old world, they'd figured. ]

That's what I've been told, yeah.

[He nods, and then suddenly looks really excited.]

Actually, uh, wait! Actually, where are you from? I'm kind of a guy who studies like... past stuff? Where I'm from? I'd totally love to talk to you about your real life experiences and all... Uh... Woah, that sounds weird when I say it aloud...

[He clears his throat awkwardly.]

Uh, the thing about radiation is, like... Well, I'm no good at sciencey stuff but basically its like bullets that are so small that you can't see them... And if there's a lot of them they can shoot you and make you sick-- Oh wait, do you have guns? If you don't, they're like really really tiny arrows.

Uh... did that... help at all?

[ Her real life experiences? What, does he want to hear about the time she turned her mom into a bear? Because that was quite the experience for sure. ]

Tiny arrows? Aye, that works. [ At least, she can get a better mental image now, even if it's still confusing. ] I'm from the highlands of Scotland. Clan DunBroch, if it means anythin' to you.

[He seems pretty thrilled about it, regardless of his next statement.]

I never really heard of it! I'm more in the southeast asia part of things. Real far from that part of Europe. But let's see, maybe with the kind of clothes you're wearing... I'm better at weapons stuff, really. You guys have recurved bows and stuff yet? Crossbows?

[ Europe...? Asia? What on earth was he talking about?

She lifts her bow into view from behind her. ] See for yourself! Crossbows, too. But I carry this.

[He's totally jazzed]

Oh, wow, that's great! That's totally great! You've got your own bow and everything, dang! I didn't think they were big on girls carryin' stuff like that back then.

[He moves his hands like he feels like he's supposed to be taking notes, but there's nothing there. Woops, maybe next time.]

Look, I'd love to talk about, like, the stuff you do and the stuff you're into and like... anything. You name the time and place, yeah?

Well, m'mum sure isn't. But da has another opinion on the matter.

[ Guess which parent she took after more? ]

Wow, that's great. What a cool dad. And yeah! I'll talk about whatever you want! I'd also like to hear, like, what you ate and the kinds of stuff your mom likes to do and your dad, and like... What kind of stuff did you have on your walls or whatever? What kind of stuff you do for fun?

[He grins.]

You come over and chat with me, I'll make you something from my home. I'm not a big chef or anything, but I can make some good stuff.

[ She could definitely gripe about what her mom likes. As well as all the other stuff. ]

Yeah? Tell me what you can make, and I'll consider it.

Well, uh, jeez. I can make some kebabs.. It's like meat and veggies on a stick and you grill em. And then I guess I'm pretty good with pork cutlets and curry and I can make a little fried rice, too.

[ Aaand most of those terms fly over her head. Though she gets veggies and, more importantly, meat. ]

Sounds like an adventure. I'll try it, and tell you what you want to know.

Sure! I'll make you a feast, just give me the when. My roommates might be in and out while we eat, but don't worry about 'em. They're cool.

Hardly have a full schedule here, do I? I can come whenever you're ready for me.
