❖ 003 ; VIDEO

[ Gwen is sewing.

There is so much time to fill these days that she takes these projects, uses them to pass her hours and keep her mind occupied with simple things rather than her worries and lord knows she has plenty.

In her lap, a dress is laid, more of a gown of silks in shades of royal blue and lighter blue. It is an impressive piece, one she is working on for many weeks on from the look of her fingers, she had poked herself with the needle more than once.

Still she works, sewing what looks like a golden embodiment on the edges.

Beside her is a cup of tea and actually, it's not the gown she wants to talk about. ]

It's rather brilliant.

[ she takes the cup, sips her tea. ]

Are they really tea-leaves? I have never heard of any leaves that can make something so wonderful. In Camelot we only have water and if you're fortunate you have milk.

[ and ale and mead and wine, but Gwen never tried those. ]

N-not that I mind the milk and the water. Or Camelot, really, I miss it quite often but -

[ she's doing it again isn't she? the babbling. She stops, smiles. ]

It is rather brilliant. Where can one find those...tea leaves? Where do they grow?

[Sue has something like ten wards, plus her own two children. And her fully-grown brother really ought to count as a kid, too.]

More or less. [The historical details of Chinese and Indian unification are not particularly relevant to this discussion, nor does Sue trust herself to get them right off the top of her head.]

China is where silk comes from, and India has spices.

Rome almost bankrupted itself buying spice from India. [Talk about an unfavorable balance of trade.]

[Given the awful state of this planet, Sue's not sure if that's real silk or if Gwen's unwittingly working with synthetics, but close enough.]

That's beautiful work. [She's not big on sewing, but boy is she ever big on clothes. Her own outfit is a black-and-white skintight suit with a giant number 4 on the chest, but she does wear civilian clothes quite a lot of the time. They're just all in her closet in another universe right now.]

You can call me Sue. [She's not one to stand on any kind of formality beyond general courtesy.]

[Camelot, Guinevere. Sue can't help her eyes widening a little. She hadn't been expecting to run into that particular end of things here. Still, it's not that much of a surprise, and she smiles.]

Gwen. Nice to meet you, too.

I travel a lot, yes.

[Honey, you don't know the half of it.]

[Honestly, she might have, but it's impossible to keep track of all the crossovers.]

No, I can't say I've ever had the pleasure. I know people who have, though.

[For some reason, Iron Man ends up there more than you'd think, and Doctor Doom used to date Morgan le Fay.]

I have friends who get around, too. [There's the slightest pause before "friends," because she's thinking of Doom, who does a lot of time traveling, and he's...well, she's not sure what he is, but it's not a friend.]

Maybe I'll ask my husband about it. It seems like it would be a nice place for a vacation. [She doesn't mean ask permission, either. Reed's the one who has to program the time machine.]

[Sue smiles back.] Reed's not here yet.

[She assumes he'll be by to pick her up soon, because that's always how it's worked in the past.]

[Oh, Gwen, that's adorably awkward.]

I understand what you're trying to say. Thank you.

It's not, but it's also not the first time. I'll be all right. It's kind of you to be concerned.

[Sue's friendly demeanor is hiding an iron will.]

Is there anyone you know from home here?

[She doesn't manage to entirely hide her reaction to "Morgana," but it's only a momentary widening of the eyes. Sue assumes Merlin will be able to keep her in line.]

"Prince" Arthur?

[That does explain a few things.]

No, I haven't. I'd like to, however.

[It's a bit of a hint, yes. King Arthur where she's from is an extremely worthwhile person, so she assumes at least some of that is going to hold across universes.]
