Status report: what the hell happened here in the last month? Casualties? What's the extent of the damage? Any retaliation missions planned?

Uh, so...gettin' any answers? [ look he missed you okay and...so maybe this is a way of also keeping an eye on you now that you're finally back. ]

[Your new bff put him in this mood, so you can go ahead and tear him a new one for that and explain to him why you don't argue with John Winchester. Ever. Teach him how to say 'yes sir'.]

[He briefly longs for a world in which he wouldn't have to worry for his son's safety because they were seen spending time together. But there's no time to indulge in fantasy.]

Right, 'course. [ sammy, sammy, sammy. sam's been his everything for most of his life, and still is, but he'd just sort of hoped...

never mind. there's a nod though, he won't fight john on this. ]

[John's sight is, as always, focused on safety, on practicality. He doesn't even see what he's doing to his boy.]

I also need you to find somewhere private for us to train. And collect all the insentient weapons you can get your hands on.

[ well, at least that's something to do and something that will make john proud if done right. so a beat before he nods. ]

Yes, sir. Private place to train and insentient weapons, got it. [ a beat. ] Is there anything else, I mean you just got back from a mission, and... [ it was so long and it must have been hard and he shouldn't have to worry about these things since dean and sam can take care of them, and-

[He nods. Finally, an answer he likes to hear - that's his good boy right there, his good son. He quirks an eyebrow as he continues to speak]

Dean. [Are you...worried...about him? Oh right. It's only now catching up to him - he died on you, you were reunited, and then he disappeared for a month. Guess...you would be worried.] You don't need to worry about me. Just do as I asked.

[Another pause] I'm real proud of you.

[ ; U ;

welp. that definitely catches him off-guard, long enough that it might almost get awkward. but then he's blinking and smiling almost slowly-- but keeping it toned down since he, yeah, no chick-flick moments, not with his dad. ]

Okay.

[No, no chick flick moments. Only fleeting half smiles. It's true though, he has never been prouder of anyone, doubts any father could be prouder of his son. It also breaks his heart because Dean -- both of his boys -- they're brilliant, they could have ruled the world. And yes, what they do is so much more important than anything they could have learned in college which is a big part of why he thought Sam about it. But they could have been so much happier with a different life.]

Good. And Dean -- no sharing our rendezvous with your pet freak.

[ aaaand there goes that moment. his face doesn't visibly falls, but he does hesitate-- ]

You sure? It might be useful for him to know because of the teleporting and all. [ probably not what john wants to hear......but dean has to give it a shot. ]

Dean. That's not a request that's an order. He nearly blew my cover once I don't want him knowing my location. Are we going to have a problem?

[Is he going to have to keep his location a secret from Dean as well? Needless to say the place will be angel-proofed]

[ but having someone around who can transport them from one place to the next instantly is super useful... ] I'll talk to him about that but Cas is really useful otherwise, dad, you need to trust me on that.

He's still breathing. Don't push your luck.

[The things he's heard...and with how annoying he is too...he really only needs a tiny nudge to go for the kill.]

But dad, he's useful. [ if nothing else then doesn't that count for something? ]

The stronger he is, the worse it'll be if he turns.

[And John never threw an empty threat in his life. It took him a lifetime but he saw the yellow eyed demon dead, when everyone said demons can't be killed, only sent back to hell. He'd do the same to an angel in a heartbeat if he feels he threatens his family.]

[ turns? have his face flash with confusion and barely hidden frustration -- and a hint of something hopeless. ]

Turns? Cas isn't gonna turn, I trust him, and you need to trust me on this, okay? Please, dad. [ never mind that cas had betrayed them back home and joined forces with a demon. that...that was a long time ago. ]

Trust you? [His face hardens] You've gone soft, Dean. You're protecting things you would've killed without second thought. You're making decisions that could get you killed and you want me to trust you about someone who could destroy this entire place and all of us in it with a flick of his finger? Did you know that, Dean? That he could wipe a whole city clean? That he did? You've given me no reason to trust him - either of you.

[ how- ]

How do you know that? [ sure, he told his dad that cas is an angel but he never said anything about wiping entire cities off the map. ] Who told you that?

You knew? So what is it Dean, you just don't care? It's ok that your little friend killed an entire town, because he pretends to be on your side?!

[From the tone of his voice it's clear he takes his earlier pride back.]

Dad, that happened years ago. [ back when cas had been a dick. ] And of course I care but things are different now and I don't expect you to understand but to trust me. [ oh, he can hear the way the pride leaves his dad's voice, loud and clear. but he can't also not defend castiel when whoever told john all of this left out so many details, not when cas is ~~more than~~ his friend. ]
