[ so insulting dad. and this ultimatum is...unfair and he feels like a kid again, under his dad's scrutiny and he still can't find the words even if he knows what it'll mean to john. ]

[Life is unfair. Losing Mary was unfair, having to live the way they did - was unfair, having to die when he was so close to finally achieving his goal was unfair, having to die by the hands of the same demon that murdered his wife -- that was really unfair. But he did it all for his boys. There is nothing he won't do to keep them safe, and that includes being hated by them.]

I see.

[He wants to punch Dean, yell at him, tie him up in a basement. And he still might. But first thing first, he has to deal with the menace. And he'll need backup for that.]

I don't want it to be this way, dad. [ but when john speaks of choices, dean feels choiceless. and he won't go along with what his dad says anymore, not because he doesn't respect him but purely because his dad is wrong and dean's finally strong enough to see that. ]

[Obviously he doesn't respect him enough to give him an explanation, which just leads John to feel completely betrayed by the one man he's always trusted most. And so close to that awful anniversary...it hurts twice as much.]

[ He huffs, almost says something haughty in return but only ends up muttering mostly to himself; ]

You used to know why we did this - you used to care. If a whole town isn't enough to force you to do it - [He's practically shaking with anger by now and the only reason he's not yelling is because he doesn't want to draw outside attention to himself. That just adds a scarier quality to his quiet tone] you're definitely not my son anymore.

I do care, dad - [ hunting and the family is all he's ever cared about. it's just...now cas is sort of part of that family, in a weird unconventional way. but the chillingly quiet tone is so unlike his father isn't lost on him, and neither are his words.

dean just wants to end this conversation by now. it hurts to hear his dad say that, because after everything they're both alive and kicking, and in the same place only to have it all come down to this. ]

Right. [ there's a nod, a heavy one but instead of utter defeat, dean looks almost determined. upset, too, sure, but he'll make his dad see how things really are.
