[The voice is coming into and out of focus, but it doesn't seem to care. It's clipped, and determined.]

They really know how to roll out the welcome mat, don't they? I feel— [buzz and static] ain't the Blitz, but— [more of the same]

I heard the Avengers were here, and I wanna sit-rep. This is [more static] Captain America. [While the reception ain't great, anyone who knows him can tell this is Not Steve.]

I need to know what I'm dealing with.

[ Captain America? He's not exactly sure how he feels about hearing that from someone other than himself. The voice sounds familiar, makes his chest ache the same way it always does whenever he gets reminders of anyone he's lost over the years, but it can't be, not if he's claiming to be Captain America - Bucky died before he left the 40s and the war behind him, so it's not possible. ]

Guess you're a replacement somewhere down the line, huh?

[The static and whole AU thing are enough to keep Bucky from recognizing the voice. Instead, he just sounds weary and resigned.]

Successor, maybe.

No one could replace him.

Not sure about that. If they let you put on the suit, you must be worthy of it.

[ Probably a lot more than he is, a man created to fit the suit rather than the other way around. ]

I didn't really ask permission.

[ He starts to ask how he came by it, what happened to whoever had it before him, but he thinks better of it. ]

You got the shield to go with it?

I guess I do, now.

Shield's the best part. [ But he's prying, so he lets it drop. ] I'm sorry, name's Steve, and you sure picked your timing, but I guess you worked that out on your own.

Steve?

[More static. Not because Bucky's saying anything, but because he's too stunned to work the network properly.]

[ He smiles at the static, remembers how it took him a while to figure out the thing and then remember what was what. He manages to catch the surprise, though. ]

Steve Rogers.

Yeah, it's—

It's me. I'm Bucky.

Bucky?

[ The passing suspicions can't be ignored with that, but a part of him still doesn't want to believe. He's been and gone before, and losing him again isn't something he can deal with. ]

Bucky.

I— [some static] I don't know what to say.

[There's a whole lot, flapping around within him like a mad bird writing lines on his insides. God, there's too much.

Steve was always better at this kinda thing.]

It's good to have you back, Buck. [ It's true, it is, and a smile carries in his voice if the static doesn't eat his words; he wouldn't wish this on anyone, being here and brought into someone else's battle, but the last he saw of Bucky where he's from he was plummeting to his death and there wasn't a thing he could do. ] Never got the chance to see you off last time, so I hoped you'd come back eventually.

What do you mean, back? [Unsure how dead he's supposed to be.]

Guess you don't remember. [ Yeah, this doesn't get any less confusing. ] You were here a while back, but didn't stick around for long. There's others that come and go.

I wasn't here. I would've remembered.

[His voice changes— it sounds more tired, maybe. More something.]

I remember everything.
