Hi everyone. I've been thinking. If we're all going to be stuck here for a long time, I figured I should find out everyone's birthday and if they have a favorite meal or type of cake. If you'd please respond to this message with your name, birthday, and a little bit about you, I'd really appreciate it!

On that note, I was thinking. If people keep turning up, we should have some sort of monthly event so everyone can get to know each other, introduce ourselves and catch up and celebrate one another's birthdays. Like a potluck, maybe? There are too many people to do do this at my apartment, so I'd need to figure out a spot. What do you think?

Oh, by the way. I'm Mahdi. I like cats, singing, and cooking. My birthday is Valentine's Day!

That's amazing! It seems like it would be fun to be a real baker, except... it's tough enough to get up for the morning rush at the diner, I can't imagine getting up super-early to bake bread and stuff.

You get used to it, after awhile. I guess I never was able to know the difference- careers are pretty set in the Districts.

The birthday thing is a nice idea, by the way.

It's a good thing you like it, then! But maybe now since you're somewhere new you can try new things. That's how I ended up with my job as a cook, actually.

Trying new things? [ the thought obviously hasn't occurred to him. He gives an awkward chuckle ] Maybe. I paint, sometimes.

[ he rubs the back of his neck ] Sure. It's in November.

Ooh, then it's coming up! [He whips out the kitten planner, ready to write down the date!] Can you tell me the day?

Not...really. Sorry. [ his dad had made an effort to give him extra squirrel meat during the last day, but other than that, birthdays weren't usually a cause of celebration in the Mellark home ] Last week sometime, I think.

Um... isn't it September? [It honestly appears as if he's not quite sure, though. He holds up his planner.]

Isn't this cute? I love cats!

Oh, sorry. I meant the last week of November. [ he squints, rubbing the back of his neck ] Though...I hadn't realized it was September already.

I'm sure no one's going to think it's theirs.

I love it. It really cheers me up to see it. Cats are great, and kittens always look so sweet and soft...

[He flips through the calendar.] Last week of November. Hot it! If we're all still here in November, I'll make sure we celebrate your birthday too. With... carrot cake?

[ an awkward chuckle ] The only cat I've really interacted with was the ugliest thing I've ever seen, so I'll take your word for it.
