[The sounds of outside filter through the network, distant with little to be heard beyond the faint rustle of the wind, but there nonetheless. A distinctive clink-fwoosh of a lighter disrupts anything further, followed by the slow crackle of burning paper and tobacco and a satisfied inhale and steady exhale. When he finally speaks, it's with a tone that lacks interest.]
Well, isn't this quaint. Doubt I would have believed it were I not seeing it with my own eyes. At least the woman greeting me was persuasive enough. [You can practically hear the dirty little smirk.]
Even so, I'm not quite sure how I feel out of my home and sent on my merry way towards college kid dorm rooms. Or rather, I'm perfectly aware of how I feel about it, just the words I'm looking for aren't for public ears.
Still. Judging by the archives on this thing, there's plenty of you about who know this world, so come on, share your wisdom with an outsider, would you? One can never know too much.
[A pause as he inhales another lungful of smoke, eventually adding with a thoughtful exhale:] Oh, and don't patronise me with the basics. I'm curious, not stupid.

A scan of the alcohol on offer is enough to have James set on the idea of scotch too, waving over the barman for a mumbled order of double scotch on the rocks. James' own tolerance to alcohol is ridiculously high, but that comes from a life of mass alcohol consumption.]
So, tell me about yourself, Adam.
action
He doesn't answer the question immediately, taking a good swig first. Still hard to believe all of this is happening but then again, he's seen some pretty crazy shit in the past few months, so why not.
When he puts the glass down his lenses retract momentarily, but only so he can wipe over his eyes, tired, and the shades are back on before anyone would have a chance to look at them. ]
Why, feel at a disadvantage?
action
[He knocks back half of his glass in one go, savouring the sting and burn as the liquid hits his throat and creeps it's way down, settling as an affectionate warmth in his stomach. Hello alcohol, it's been so long, darling, I've missed you.
James watches those lenses of Adam's curiously, but without question. They're fancier than anything he's ever seen.]
action
And yeaaaah, he takes his time with the drink. He probably won't be ordering another one thank you. ]
Life's not always fair, Mr Bond.
[ Oh doesn't he know all about that. But still, he relents. ]
Be more specific.
action
What is it you did back home? Before all of this.
action
Heading the physical security team for a moderately sized bioengineering corporation. [ a beat. ] Law enforcement before that.
action
Bioengineering? I suppose that explains all the... [A vague hand flick at Adam.]
action
[ Oh that came out a bit sharply. SAY IT. ]
action
[Just getting you back for all the trolling, bro.]
action
By god. You must be the first to point that out.
[ Can't see it but he's rolling his eyes. Adam's easily offended but he's behaving himself right now--and goes back to his drink.]
This isn't unusual where I'm from. They call it progress, Mr Bond.
action
[Squaring his shoulders as he goes back to his drink. His own bulk doesn't show under the suit so well, but hey, Adam's seen him naked anyway.]
Still, at least I now know Robocop was an accurate depiction of the future.
action
Yeah? I wonder if you would have gotten very far without your arms or legs. Sometimes people don't have a choice.
[ Also ignoring that RoboCop comment fuck you he's not going to tell you he's from Detroit too. ]
action
Are there cranky war veteran stories to come from this?
action
[ Really, it would amount to 'and then I crashed through a window and got shot in the head'. ]
Nothing worthy of a feature-length movie. Much less twenty of them. Or however many there are about you, I didn't count.
action
How are there even--? Actually I don't want to know. [His life isn't even worthy of one movie, let alone in excess of twenty.]
action
They're all based on books, too. Wanna know some titles? I could probably remember a few off the top of my head.
action
[He'd rather find that sort of stuff out with private research, so he can bury his face and sob lonely tears.
And there goes another drink downed all too quickly, James really isn't savouring these like he should.]
So I take it you're rather ahead of time? All that bio gear is nothing I'm used to seeing.
action
Yes. The year was 2027.
[ But considering here is supposed to be 3312 ... ]
action
That quite a technological jump for less than twenty years, though, even by our standards.
[Then again, with some of the Bond gadgets, it might not be totally off. Q will probably be making bionic shit in no time.]
action
Some things just went differently where I'm from. If you've never heard of guy called Hugh Darrow, you probably won't have anything like this.
[ maybe he should just go back to wearing gloves around here; then again he doesn't really like having to hide who or what he is. he reaches over to pick up his glass again, which has probably a crack or two because he still has trouble with the pressure he's exerting at times. ]
action
[And then a thoughtful grunt, because he's never given much thought to such universal quandaries, and now he's being bombarded by the idea of alternate universes.]
I don't like the thought of it all.
action
Maybe you do. Your maker must have gotten his ideas somewhere--or maybe he's a dimension hopper himself.
[ Oh god. ]
I'd be careful about who to trust if I were you.
action
[The whole girlfriend fucking him over, and not in the nice way, kind of taught him all of that already.]
action
Of course not. Just pointing out another possibility.
action
I think I'll manage.
