You wanna win a war, your soldiers need to give a damn about which way it goes. We don't have a pony in this race, and a lot of guys smarter than me have written about mercenary armies. You might as well light all the cash you promise 'em on fire. They'd just as soon turn tail to save their own hides as do what they're told.
