[After about an hour spent fiddling with it, Lance has finally made his netbook do something productive.]

So, from what I understand, we're here to fight some war that we have nothing to do with. How has that worked out so far, hmm? It seems a bit counter productive to me when you steal people away from their homes.

Anyway, I happen to have a... gift for ripping holes in the fabric of worlds. Quite convenient when one wants to get from one place to another quickly. Worlds included.
If any of you people are feeling particularly brave or adventurous, I could be persuaded to open one of those holes for you. Now, I don't guarantee success or, that you will come out in one piece.

Of course. [he sets the netbook down--from the view, it's clear that he's on a partially frozen lake--and begins to cast a spell. Shadow energy gathers in his gauntlets as he recites the incantation, then bolts outward, like thin veins of lightning. As they strike the air beside him, an archway rises from the ice. Purplish-black mist swirls inside the archway, which looks all the more forbidding for the glowing-eyed ram's skull that decorates its top.

Koltira steps through the mist, and emerges directly back onto his ice platform.]

Ordinarily this would return me home, regardless of what planet I happened to be on. As you can see, this did not happen.

That's certainly...impressive. [Showy, actually. But whatever, magic tends to work that way.]

Have you never thought that perhaps there's something in how the spell works that prevents you from succeeding? The magic I intend to use acts a bit differently.

There isn't. The fabric of this particular world blocks the spell, like an impenetrable shield.

You are free to try your luck, of course. [he'll just be chillin' over here with an 'I told you so' all set to deploy.]

I'll try regardless. I'd like to know for sure that my way won't work.

Not the spell as much as my own understanding. My people are uniquely attuned to magic of any kind--including forces which block its use. [he shrugs.] Suit yourself.
