[Medivh stands in front of his comm, it hovering by a gentle gesture from one outstretched hand. He scowls once before turning away, tossing over a number of rocks and pieces of metal. He has a small table in his room, which he's scorched and nearly torn apart with small experiments. Picking up and slamming a number of the rocks and metals down on the table-top, Medivh's hand turned over and an arcane trickle of magic imbued itself into the scraps he set down. Bit by bit, those scraps hardened and turned more dense, becoming pink crystals, which eventually shaped themselves into a little crystal imp. The imp looked around and suddenly shrieked with hollow, mechanical laughter before Medivh fed it a fresh scowl.]
I had forgotten what I had set out to say.
[He turned his hand open and with one callous gesture, he blew up the imp with a ball of flame. Shards of crystal flew around the room, some embedding in the walls.]
...Ah, yes. A library. I notice this place lacks paper. You may seem pleased with your affinity towards liquid chemicals and electricity, but I prefer something with more texture. Now, I require one thing of you. A date.
[Medivh's fingertip made looks in the air, the crystals slowly returning to where they were on the table. The imp began to reform, but in a patchwork sort of way. When he was done reforming, the imp didn't move so much, looking a bit less excited than he initially was.]
I need a date in which a suitable library would be present on the barren planet below. Make haste--my patience has already given way. You should learn quickly--a bored magus is a terrible thing.
[So, he blew up the imp again.]

( She objects, but she's having a hard time hiding her laughter behind an upraised hand. )
The Library? Uh... I think Alexandria! In way ancient times, you'll have to find a historian to know, or work with the whole um. The AI here! Though what was that thing you were blowing up? It looked alive...

The concept of creating his own elementals was... wholly predictable, really. It wasn't a new experiment for him. Without so much as batting a lash, Medivh raised his hand and summoned forth a torrent of Arcane power, which shaped itself into a vaguely humanoid creature.
Moments after, Medivh dismissed it. Instead of exploding like the imp, it dissipated like mist.]
Elementals, girl. Normally you have to summon such things from anomalies, but these are created from the anomaly that is myself.
Now. Where on that world is Alexandria? I suppose the ones manipulating the time device may be able to tell me when it is.

... You might want to find a real historian to ask though, I am not your girl for those kinds of things!
( Which is where she pauses, since there is something she'd like to know. )
What's an elemental? I mean, I can see what one is, but what are they really?

Being asked for complexities is tiresome, especially when you will certainly not understand even a fraction of my summary. However, you have answered me, so I will return the favor all the same. Answer her. [That had been directed at the elemental. Medivh sat down and began cleaning off his boots. The Elemental looked to Medivh with hollow eyes and began speaking for him.]
Typically, we are remnants of the Old Gods, once banished until summoned into the world by those with magic. We represent and at the same time, are the elements. Many among us have names and personalities while the rest of us are chaotic in nature and exist only as physical manifestations of our concepts.
I am an Elemental of the Arcane--pure, unfettered magic, not bound to a single form. If you believe fire to be an element--then, I am the fuel that bursts to create fire. If you believe water to be an element, then I am the force that binds it to liquid. I am the movement of air and the density of rock.

( She says to the guy who kept exploding the elemental(s), turning her attention on the one taking. The scientific explanation would be different, probably something about energy, but magic may as well be energy itself, harnessed in another form. She has to smile, then grin as the elemental speaks. )
You're the shock that comes at the moment you're totally surprised?
( ... yes. With the element of surprise.
Where are the My Little Pony crew when one needs them? )

You're close, child. The shock after surprise would be the 'void'. The yielded result rather than the potential of an explosion itself may seem similar to it, but the two are opposing sides of the same equation.
The 'Arcane' would be the shock that surprises you. So, you may see why some of it is utterly bunk and nonsense to speak of. Oh, it's actually somewhat more interesting to practice than to simply speak of.

Can anyone learn to practice the Arcane?

[Still, Medivh smiled. He understood what Collette had been aiming for and yearning for education was something he could easily sympathize with.]
Rather, would you like for me to test if you can?
no subject
You can do that? Of course! It's not like it's bad if I can't, but without you trying, then I'd never know for sure!

Are you quite aware of how dangerous the life of a magic-user may be?

People are afraid of everything. They're afraid of change, of bumps in the night and even such simple things as taking medicine. You must have heard stories.
no subject
So what stories should I be listening for? The ones where the world rain fire, or water swallows the land? It doesn't need to be that big to matter, or be impressive.
no subject
It used to be be that a plow was viewed as magic. A device that could make tilling the land come easier and easier. Though, admittedly I suppose it makes sense to ask a more general question. Have you ever encountered stories of things totally abnormal to what you considered a normal reality?
