[Raiden is pacing around outdoors somewhere, holding his communicator in one hand as he talks. The shot is sloppy and at times unfocused, but he doesn't do anything to correct this.]

You know, during military phases stuff sometimes comes up that nobody expected. Lulls in combat are like that. Unplanned. So I get why some people are nervous. Use this time to rest up a bit and get prepared for when the war resumes.

[He taps a claw against the side of his head.]

Not saying you shouldn't enjoy yourselves while you can, but a lull isn't the same thing as a ceasefire. The United Earth hasn't agreed to anything, so things could get shitty pretty quickly.

That's why I'm thinking about teaching classes during lulls. Nothing official, really, since we have lots of folks here willing to teach combat tactics, but I wouldn't feel right if I didn't offer. I was a military trainer back home so I can teach you how to survive and protect yourself on the battlefield. There are things that even VR won't prepare you for, trust me.

[A pause]

Speaking of that, I wouldn't mind sparring with someone to keep my reflexes sharp. I know some of you enjoy that sorta thing so let me know if you're interested.

[Soft, rusty chuckle]

Just don't expect me to go easy on you.

[He waves his claws in what is supposed to be a playful salute, but it comes across as clumsy and awkward.]

Well, we could probably find wooden swords somewhere, too. Weapon doesn't matter too much, you know? The important thing is being able to test yourself against real, thinking people. Not just the AIs in the virtual reality training.

The martial arts, sir. I practice the Six Styles famous in my world.

The Six Styles?

It's more like 'six techniques' which may be stylized. If you master all six techniques, you can become superhuman and turn your entire body into a weapon.

I think I'd like to see that. Always interested in how other folks approach the martial arts.

Then, I hope what I can demo for you will be worthwhile, sir!

When will you be free?

Early mornings are usually okay. I could come by after training.

That might be better. I train others in the afternoon and do my own training right when I arrive. Does 10 AM sound fine?

[Coby, of course, waited with diligent patience for Raiden to arrive the moment he set foot in his usual training room, seating himself in preparation to meditate.]

[Raiden arrives with a soft clacking of toe claws. He sees that Coby is preparing to meditate so he remains silent. After all, Raiden meditates too, at times, though mostly for show. He tends to miss the basic point of the practice.]

[Coby greatly excused the fact that Raiden apparently lacked a discernible jaw much like Axe-Hand Morgan who tormented him briefly when he was younger.

It was easy to ignore that feature, when Raiden was worlds more polite. When he looked Raiden over, he beamed a smile.]

Sir.

[Standing up--Coby raised one hand in a gesture of greeting.]

[Raiden chuckles at this and waves a dismissive hand.]

Just call me Raiden.

Of course.

[Coby began stretching his arms out, smiling modestly.]

So--how would you like to begin?

[With a thin but honest smile]

Well...If we're sparring, we should probably start with deciding what weapons we're gonna use, right? If any.

Well, it depends. Which do you feel more confident in? Hand-to-hand or a blade?

[Coby gestured to his cavalry sword leaned against the wall.]

I'm not as proficient with my sword, but I've learned plenty.

Better with a sword, myself. Never got much training in CQC.

[He shrugs his metal shoulders]

But you're the one demonstrating a technique, so if you prefer hand-to-hand then I'm fine with that.

Well, it certainly depends, sir. The first technique I would show you could hurt you if your hands aren't shielded.

[Not that Coby really knew Raiden was R2D2, yet. He's seen plenty of other Marines covered in armor with metal pieces on their face to automatically assume too much.]

[Raiden manages a thin half-smile at this.]

Don't worry about me. I'm pretty durable.
