What is a bard, to you in your world?

This is something that's worried me for a little while now. I've been thinking about it in my own world and circumstances, and... I still don't have an answer. Which worries me.

I want other's thoughts, that I might better understand what I think I am.

*At various bars, streets, and other areas, Pidonus can be found, lute in hand, playing a melody a few may have heard from the distance.

Someone here must have taught her this piece, at some point, for it's in English. And even the locals are stopping frequently to it's not-quite-rhythmic melodies and lyrics speaking of a world more like her own than where she was now.

More unusually, even for those who have heard Pidonus play before, this time, she is actively singing.

[Perhaps not join, per se, but Rita's just as drawn in as the others. Music wasn't something she encountered so often at home - there were no known guitar blastia, though not for lack of trying - so something like this was new for her. It didn't hurt that this was a side of Pidonus she hadn't really seen a lot of.

The girl's trying to be unobtrusive, but still make her presence apparent, leaning against a wall facing her while she plays.]

*After finishing off another melancholy piece, Pidonus smiled to the small audience she'd gathered, then tossed her lute onto her back, and walked over towards Rita.*

[No sense hiding her concern. If Pid wanted it, she could just fish it out, so Rita figured she may as well cut out the middleman.]

More in a philosophical sense than a literal one, but... Yes.

I have abilities, but I grow less confident about how useful they are.

in my experience a bard is a player class in a particular video game
although i think it can also refer to a wandering musician of antiquity

People keep mentioning the "video game" thing, which I will admit throws me off a little. Still haven't had a chance to play any.

Well, first and foremost, if there's anything I can do to help other than being a sounding board and a therapist, I'm there. For the rest... I can try. Feelings were never my strong suit, desire to burn something notwithstanding, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Music, to my world's bards, is a means to an end and the end itself. It carries power both primal and arcane, and it has access to many skills - more than almost anyone.

But that's the mechanical effects. What it is... I don't know as much yet.

...A little while before I came here, I was in pretty much the same place you are now. It wasn't fun, but I got through it. It's just going to take a lot of searching, and a lot of figuring out what you really want from yourself and your life.

Why do you need the opinions of others to decide who you are?

Perhaps sometime. I've heard descriptions, but I suspect it's one of those things you have to experience to really understand.

Then why not try to work towards that path? Everyone has their own goals they are interested in pursuing. You don't need to change it up right away, but a little bit at a time will help.

[Rise just happens to be taking a walk through the city today - a rare thing for her, but lately she's been trying to be a little more cheerful. It's easier than it has been for the past few months, at least.

She pauses at the sound of the music, though... she could swear she recognizes that voice! To her surprise, she follows it and sees Pidonus. She'd never seen her perform before... and she doesn't want to interrupt. So she just finds a comfortable place to stand and watches, smiling faintly.]
