[ You just give her a moment to finish devouring the hot dog. Once she’s done, she’s ready to get down to business. ]

Oooookay, so I got the You’ve Been Chosen! Tour, saw the sights, got myself soaked wet and found the dirtiest, smelliest and cheapest hot dog stall that has ever been put in a corner. Exsilium, huh?

[ She shrugs, her tone casual, but those who know her might notice the tension in her shoulders and the sharpness in her eyes. ]

Sure beats Apokolips any given day in my list of worlds to suddenly get zapped into. I mean, if you can work out the plumbing issue… [ She points at the rain that can be seen in the window behind her. ] It would be great, really.

Anyway, I’m not much into whining. Name’s Dinah, Dinah Lance, and if you’ve seen a trigger happy…uh, blonde, do let me know. Babs, Helena, Zinda, if you’re hearing this, I’m starving, so be the friends you’re supposed to be and get me something to eat.

[ There's a mountain of questions she's tempted to ask her right off the bat, but she can't pick even one. Her tongue flops uselessly in her mouth. ]

[And Renee would recognize that voice and flash of red hair and pale skin until her dying day. Even the mask can't hide her shock.]

[What hurts the most is the way her heart soars with joy and hope for a second at the sight of her, before her rational side reminds her that she's long since burned that bridge out of a misplaced desire to protect the woman on camera]

[Why, why does Kate have to be here? She has a life back home, people who need her, and Renee...Renee's not sure how ready she'll ever be to interact with her]

[ Recognition is a good thing, but her heart eventually sinks into her stomach anyway. ]

You... [ She searches for words. ] Did you just arrive? Where are you?

[Renee feels as if the ground is dropping out from under her, all the old feelings bubbling up as she tries to shove them back where they belong]

Yes. With the latest batch. [She's silent for a moment, debating with herself] They put me up with a cot in the temporary housing. I'm writing on a roof two buildings down the street.

[ It occurs to her when a familiar ache presses to her chest that after all this time, no, she's not completely finished with Renee. She doesn't know how to let go and in reality, she doesn't want to. Despite the bad, they had good history between them.

It's a surge of anger, resentment, joy, and confusion all at once. ]

... We should talk.

[ She covers up her desperation with a stoic attitude. She doesn't want to sound like she's crawling back to the woman who left her (yes, in her eyes, Renee's the one who walked out on her no thanks to that accursed book). ]

[Renee knows that feeling. There's a reason she's steered clear of Gotham, and it has as much to do with the good memories as the bad. Because she hasn't really moved on with her life, hasn't built something solid for herself. When she sees Kate sometimes all she can think about is how she's rarely felt happier than in her arms. How much she wants to go back.

And she can't do that. She's not ready, may never be ready, and she can't just keep bringing Kate into her life, only to leave her or lose her and have them both suffer that hurt again. Somewhere it has to stop.]

I...

[She'll what? Leave again? Find a new city, try and rebuild? There's no other cities apparently, nowhere to escape to. Is she going to spend her time here dodging her ex, avoiding any potential allies, staying off the network? Time to grow up Renee.

The stoicism in Kate's voice hurts, but she tries to channel it in her own. Can't create false hope]

[ Too many people living in hers and with the chance Roslyn might drop by, she opts to avoid that scenario. God, how is she going to explain this to Ros? She'll figure it out later, she supposes. First thing's first. ]

[ Her heart beats like a jackhammer. Too fast, too nervous. She wants to see her and yet is already regretting saying anything, not giving herself time to steel herself. But they never get to have these reunions on their own terms, do they? ]

[Rarely does she feel such a mixture of joy and gut twisting dread as she does in this moment. She hates herself for being so happy just to see Kate again, but it's best to get the pain over with quickly.]
