You may be right about that. Yet, everyone seems to have a different idea of time. If only we could say for certain what 'soon' means to him.

Familiar, first and foremost. But I'll take that to mean I'm doing a good job.

Does this job extend to ensuring their safety? Or is it simply observation?

Sometimes I can't afford to separate the pair. Not that I don't like to have my cake and eat it, too.

But even having such knowledge and attention, it would still be hard to say what plans he had in mind. Is that true?

That's right. A man can hope that diligence might lead him somewhere fruitful. And he's taken measures to make his departure discreet.
