That's it?!

[His voice bursts out, practically yelling, angry to cover any sadness or shame that might be there. He's bubbling over, still restless from the failed battle for Elmer's world. And anger needs direction, so he's throwing it outward.]

We're just going to leave that world like that?! Destroyed and broken and desecrated?! We have to go back! Bring all the people here! We can save them, or go back in time and stop it all from happening, or something! Why are we just sitting here?!

"I'm taking it this is the first planet you've lost, huh?"

The first -

[The answer is yes. Yes it is.]

There - there shouldn't even be that many!

"Back home... Was a war between two species. One ate planets, ate every living thing on them, the other bombed planets into desolate rocks. Got stuck in between that mess. Loosin a world ain't ever easy."

[Well, shit, that sort of makes this a little less - well no it's still terrible. But that's terrible too.]

How many....how many...did they destroy?

"I saw it happen over a dozen times. Pitched in, tried to fight the hordes off but only so much a man can do. We were able to reclaim a few of them and with a lot of work bring some life back but.... Not sayin I like it. Hell, its about as bad a feeling as you can have but, ya gotta take that anger and do something good with it. Don't let it crush ya."

[He's shocked into silence for a few moments. Over a dozen times...he can't even comprehend it. At least stopping the anger in its tracks helps him process Raynor's words. The man sounds pretty knowledgeable, and what's more, not heartless. Med'an can't connect with someone who doesn't understand what it is to feel, but if it's possible to feel and still keep going...]

We have to...do something. [That was pretty calm and wimpy sounding, though.]

"Sure do. Gotta do all we can so it doesn't happen again, and so those who did it are put square and regret it. Thing is, gotta get ourselves together to do that. Lashin out like a madman never did no good to no one."

[He makes a huffy sigh sound. He's easily riled up, obviously, but he's also easily calmed back down. He doesn't sound super happy about it, though.]

We have to - put ourselves together then. We have to do it now, but how...?

"Group fights better than a man... Group with a purpose fights better than a group without one. Maybe somethin like this is what was needed to start towards that."

Sometimes you can't save everyone you want to save.

Besides, if you can travel through time, why does it matter when you start?

No - I mean, I know that, but - there's still something. We didn't save anybody. Even just a few would've been - if we could've done just a little!

[Pause....this question is hard. And makes him madder.]

W - well what's the point in not doing something now?!

Except that we aren't ready now. Do you want to go in and find the same situation all over again, because we moved too soon?

[He can't even begin to comment on the first part. He agrees there.]

Then we have to get ready! But we haven't heard anything from the Initiative in hours! [Because apparently "hours" is a huge amount of time now.]

[Obviously someone who's never dealt with red tape.]

I'll be surprised if we hear anything from them at all. It isn't easy for a leadership to admit they're weak, which is exactly what they'll need to do.

[Yeaaaaaah he's pretty new at all this.]

They - [He stops to just. Fume for a few moments. Logically, he understands, but logic isn't really working for him right now. He doesn't want to think about how they understandably need time to get their shit together, he wants something to happen now.]

They have to say something. We're here because of them. They have to take responsibility!

I don't disagree. Unfortunately, what you and I may believe is necessary is not always what they manage to see.

You could always start a rebellion against the rebellion?

No, I don't. Not in the slightest. But it is an option, and one I've heard more than one person mention so far.

Don't know there are many people left there to save.

We could lose more people than we'd save by opening those portals back up.

We can go back in time! We can find them when they're not dead - when the danger's just started! If we can change things, then why do people -

[He breaks off, knowing that his logic is flawed, and even exactly how it's flawed...but he can't quell his pain and frustration. He's supposed to save people, not watch them die.]

I don't really know. The sort of thing is beyond me...but I know that-

[A pause.]

-it's not easy to accept. But sometimes there's not much you can do. It's regrettable. It is. I'm not saying those people needed to die...but...

Fuck, I mean. Sometimes you just have to remember them and hope they made it to the Light. Sometimes that's all you can do.

[Well, that wasn't what he was expecting. Swearing! But more than that - he supposed he just didn't think of Thassarian as someone who thought about the Light a lot. At least the surprise diffuses some of his anger. His shoulders sag.]

But...that's...that's. So little.

It is. Best you can do sometimes is just to make sure it doesn't happen again.

[He struggles with it. Obviously Thassarian is going to know more about this stuff than he is. He should just accept what the man says.]

...no, not here - here we can change things - we just have to figure out when to go back in time. And...then that world won't be dead!

I wish it was that easy, Med'an. I don't really know much about this shit, it's well beyond me. We just have to try and make the best of what we're given.

Would be nice if we could go back, but who knows if that's possible.

And what makes you think that our chances of victory would be any greater had we begun the fight at an earlier time? Abandoning a planet isn't something to be done lightly, but...at the moment, our objective should be to weaken the UE in the past so that we can win the next time we enter that battle.

That's what I mean! We need to go back in time! We don't even have to have this battle if we can stop them from coming to that planet in the first place!

[quietly] Even if we'd had some idea about it beforehand, it's hard to know if we would've been able to do enough to save the survivors. We did everything we could with the time and info we had.

Everyone who went out - everyone who fought or tried to help the situation - everyone did their best. And we'll continue to, so hopefully this doesn't have to happen again.

It just wasn't enough this time. I'm sorry.

It's... normal to be angry about stuff like this, I think. But shouting at us won't save those people either.

This whole thing's about making it so the U.E. never gets that strong to begin with. You don't gotta worry about that world, 'cause once we change the U.E.'s past, it'll be like they never got there.

Why can't we go back and stop them from going there, right now? [Not angry, tho, cause Jesse is right. Just...impatient.]

'cause we ain't ready yet. The good thing about time travel is there's no hurry. We can, you know, plan. Hone our skills or whatever. If we go now, they'll just kick our asses again.

[He's quiet before he makes a frustrated noise. HE HAS TO DO SOMETHING NOWWWWWWWWWWWW.]

Then we have to start...as soon as possible. I can't just sit here...

Keep training. Help other people train.

It happens in war. You lose battles. Sometimes there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

We just lost an entire planet! [PLANETS ARE BIGGER THAN BATTLES. WHICH MEANS....SOMETHING.]

This war has become much bigger than one world. It's for all our worlds now.

I know that - and that makes it even more important! It could have been our world!

Could have. But it wasn't. And it does us no good to rush in without a plan, which takes time.

[The entire time, his voice remains calm and blunt. War, death, and destruction are old hat to him; he honestly doesn't care about the people of that world. He only cares about stopping the UE so that they can't do it to his world.]

This isn't the first world I've seen wrecked like this. But we saved some survivors back then...more than I can say now.

[He sounds resigned, broken-hearted]

The odds start to look insurmountable.

[They should make the Broken-Hearted Good Guys support group. ;; ]

If the Initiative can bring us back to life - and can bring us back to this world - then why can't they do that for everyone else?!

[Yes, definitely.]

I don't know, but I think I want some answers.

[He puts his head in his hands off-screen. ANGST.]

[ Hearing all that, Feferi mostly just feels sorry for him. Obviously the loss of another's world was tragic, but she wasn't ready to give up yet. ]

Hey it's okay! It's not hopeless yet! I do not know if you noticed, but the fighting was not doing us much good. We need to come back and regroup and go back at it with another strategy!

I know, but - but then we need to do that! We need to make another strategy! [LIKE RIGHT NOW.]

We will! We will when everyone calms down a little, and when we get everyone fixed up. Right now, in this very second, we need to worry about the people. Then we can work on the plans!
