[A slow switch to video. The tablet is bigger than her cellphone from home. Junko waves with a smile. Today she is quirky fashion idol Junko Enoshima: nothing more nothing less. ]

You know, I've never seen a war up close before. Not a real war, anyway. The fashion world is really cut throat though! Kidnapping is really Hollywood, don't you think? It's definitely scary. You know, I think it might even be scarier than home.

[She pauses. ]

... You know, all of that text was a lie. I'm very glad to be out of school. From one scary place to the next, I think my luck is super duper bad. Super duper extremely bad, even. The worst, most despairing luck ever.

[Her shoulders sag.] I wonder if any of my classmates escaped too? Maybe that's a silly wish. Hope is really futile, huh?

[Acting comes easy. She probably seems a little nuts, and that's fine. It's easy to explain home. It's easy to claim trauma too. Being on video is tiring, though; keeping her expression in check, keeping her voice completely miserable -- it's all completely fake. She sighs, the only genuine thing about this broadcast.

The despair she feels is not even an impressive kind. It's unexpected and spontaneous, but it's low quality and lackluster. Behind her, out of sight, sits Monobear, immobile and useless for now. Her figure head, reduced to a plush toy with a broken on switch. She forces a smile. ]

Let's be friends, I meant that part.

[And with that, she ends the video. ]

You're a model? I mean, not that I'm surprised cos you're really cute, but-- Uh. I mean, you can always find ways to support the effort that aren't fighting.

[His eyes warm up encouragingly.]

I know stuff feels real crazy right now, but it'll get better. Hope's not futile! It's pretty much the best thing for you right now. Don't despair, cos that's the easiest way to lose your grip. If you need any help, just gimme a call, ok? Me and my rival Haruto are kind of your go-to guys for hope.

[Hope. Her smile feels a little strained. Hope, hope, hope -- he sounds just like Naegi. So completely sure and full of optimism. She tilts her head to the side. ]

You're really sweet, aren't you, Kousuke? I think I'm blushing. Do you really think I could help people? My super high school level talent seems so useless here, you know?

[He blinks at her using his first name, and looks a little shy for a second.]

Aw, nah, it's just... you know, what I gotta do. I'm a Kamen Rider, if you know what that is. And sure you can help people, everybody's got their own part to play, right? You just gotta figure out what yours is.

A-anyhow, what's a super high school level talent? I don't think we have those where I'm from.

[She is a fast mover; she is so smooth with all this forwardness. Maybe one day he will get a cute suffix too. Like ~rin. She thinks he could be a Kousuke-rin.

Junko already knows her part in things. She has done since she was born into the world. ]

It's the best talent in the world. The people who attend my school are the very best at what they do, that's why we're "Super High School Level".

What's a Kamen Rider?

[His eyes widen and he looks properly impressed.]

Woah, that's awesome. When I was in high school, I had no idea what I was gonna do with myself. It's cool, you had it figured out so fast.

[He seems to catch up to her question. He grits his teeth and sucks in.]

Uhhh... Well, I guess... It's like a guy who wears a mask and has a suit or whatever and protects people? I'm a wizard, too. I'm, uh, I'm Beast. I can fight with my suit, it's a thing. I'm no good at explaining this stuff.

[She taps her chin, processing this information and storing it away. It sounds pretty bizarre, even to her. ]

Could it be you're playing a joke on me? Is that all true?

[He shakes his head]

Nah, it's all true. I dunno how I could make up stuff like that. Me and Haruto both fight these monsters that try to make people despair so they'll turn into monsters too. It's kind of rough going sometimes, but we've pulled it through so far.

... Huh? Really?

[That sounds

amazing. ]

Really, really?

[He looks very slightly ill-at-ease]

Yeah, it's true. The monster'sre called Phantoms. Only certain people can become 'em when they fall to despair, called gates. If you can overcome the despair, you can be a wizard. I'm not a gate, though. I just ended up finding a phantom and teaming up with it, sort of.

Doesn't that mean ... you teamed up with despair?

Um...

[He has never thought of that before. But Chimaera has never shown any interest in making more phantoms, even when it became clear that eventually his supply would run out. So he shakes his head.]

Nah, not really... I mean, my Phantom eats other Phantoms, so he's totally on our side, I guess. I mean, he's kind of... He doesn't really pick a side. So I'm just teamed up with Chimaera, not despair.

[He still looks just a touch uncomfortable.]

Mmm, but isn't that what despair does? It eats up all other despair until it's the biggest one around!

[She pauses. ]

I'm sorry, that was really rude. You should be careful, though.

[Kousuke looks mildly disturbed, just in general. He can't decide if he's more disturbed by the idea, or by the fact she had it. She doesn't really seem like the type to be so dark. But then again, he's not a very good judge of character.]

Um. Yeah, I'll be careful. I don't think I'm in any danger though... Chimaera can't really be born through my body cos I'm not a gate. So he can't go and create any despair out there.

Then you really lucked out, huh?

[Oh, if only he knew how disturbing she really was. ]

Uh... yeah! I mean there are totally worse things than havin' a monster inside you, ha ha.

[It barely shows on his face, that he's glossing over the big downside to being involved with Chimaera, the chance he might get eaten. TO him, that's just a tiny unpleasantness that probably won't ever mean anything.]
