Sales time!

[The screen flickers on, showing Meliantha's face.]

Greetings, fellow travellers.

In the course of our last mission, I was able to take some time to exchange some of the currency from my home into currency for the place we were in, and then obtain supplies with it. For example, I was able to get clothing for myself, as well as the person whose body I had temporarily.

With what I had left - considerable amount, gold is much more precious there, it seems - I obtained items that people have mentioned on the network as desiring.

I have two hundred packages each of these kinds of... cigarettes. [She holds up two different packs, Marlboros and Kool 100s.]

I also have seventeen bottles each of... just a moment... 'Smernoff' vodka, Southern Comfort, and Bacardi. The bottles say they are 24 ounces.

I am willing to sell them - in fact, I obtained them to sell them to people, as they're not vices I indulge in, personally. I am also willing to trade for services! For example, I would like proper training with guns, as I do not know how to use them particularly well, and as long as I am here I should be learning how to use them. Also, cooking lessons would be appreciated, as I am terrible at it.

Please leave me a message and I will get back to you. According to my partner in this enterprise - who has already claimed part of it for his assistance - the packs will be ten marks each, the bottles thirty.

[Meliantha has a few cloth bags sitting on one of the tables in the room, waiting for people. Each has a note attached, but being that it's in her native written language, they're probably unreadable to most people. She herself is waiting around, door unlocked.]

[She knows Meliantha had told her to just walk on in, but custom tells her to at least knock first. After three light taps, she slowly opens the door, just in case it isn't okay (or in case she has the wrong room), and she cranes her neck to peek around.]

Hello?

[Meliantha is sitting on the couch, wearing a dark green shirt and pale beige pants and heavy boots - yay, army-navy stores of the 1990s - and she looks up from where she was writing things down. It has to be her - the video matches, after all.]

Hello. [She reaches for one of the bags, and picks it up, standing.] Here's your package!

[Asami takes broader steps inside once she knows she has Meliantha's approval. After receiving the package, she looks inside and really has no idea what to make of it.]

Thank you. This is liquor, correct?

Yes. Decidedly strong stuff. I did the research when we got back. The clear stuff is called 'one fifty one', and is about seventy-five percent alcohol, and the amber is distilled and about thirty percent alcohol. [She shrugs.] Enough people asking about it on the network, thought I'd try and help people out a little.

That does sound pretty strong.

[She gives the package, although she can't see its contents, another glance-over. Then she sets it down so that she can withdraw her payment.]

If anything I'm sure my roommates will appreciate it.

Good. One of the benefits of being a professional scout is finding things, and I'm glad I could get things people appreciated.

[She doesn't push; that's rude.]

Hopefully not to excess - the toilets here are better than those where I'm from, but I don't think I want to be the one that holds their head out.

[Asami withdraws 60 marques out of her jacket pocket and hands it over.]

Yeah, I'll certainly supervise. Have you tried any of this, yourself?

Good, good. [She takes the money, without counting it - she's trusting, sometimes.]

My friend Johnny let me have some of his. The Bacardi tastes sweet, then hits like a hammer; the vodka tastes kind of metallic; and the Comfort has a kind of smoky taste, like a strong brandy. If they have brandy where you're from.

It's hard to tell whats in what worlds sometimes.

I've had wine and hard cider since coming here. They were both pretty good... But other than that—at home, I mean—I've really only had sake on special occasions.

[She shrugs, picking up the package again.] So, this will be my first time with liquor, if I choose to have any.

[And who is she trying to kid, here; she will.]

[She chuckles.] Okay, will do.

I'm Meliantha. [she offers a hand to shake.]

I think you're Asami, but if I'm wrong, please correct me.

Yup, that's right. [She shakes her hand.] It's a pleasure to meet you.

I'll let my friends know where I got the goods in case they missed you on the network, although I'm sure you won't have any problem selling.

Thank you. I just saw people on the network asking for these things, and I had a little time to spare, so... why not make people happy and make myself a little something too? No one said it was against the rules, so... [A shrug.] I bet next time there's going to be a run on the stores, though.

Yeah, definitely. And honestly, this place could use a little more trade and commerce, so you're doing a good thing.

I don't have much in the way of real training as a merchant, or any real skills for making things. I fight. It's what I do. I just get inspired sometimes.

Like this. [She plucks at her clothing.] I found a store and bought things I liked. It was just a case of making a decision. I may see about the next big mission, trying to put together a buying expedition while we're gone.

it doesn't seem that shops change much no matter what, other than how you pay for things, and even that can be gotten around.

That's not a bad idea. You could set up some sort of gift shop here with all the things you collect from other worlds. Jack up the prices, which would be acceptable and expected since the goods would be considered extremely rare around here. The only problem is most of the Exile population around here wouldn't be able to afford it.

Although, if you want to target the Transports, I don't see why you couldn't do it. You don't really even need merchant training; it's like you said, it's about supply and demand and keeping an eye on the market.

[Half of that was conversation, but she also seemed to be thinking out loud. She looks at Meliantha with raised eyebrows. Oops.]

True. I'll keep an eye out. I mean, watch for people going "I wish I had", then use my training as a scout to not just check the area but also keep an eye out.

And maybe just some normal food. I'd KILL for some deathcheese or lotus cheese. ...all right, not kill, but I'd love some.

[A brief pause. Then apologetically:] ...I like cheese a lot. It's one indulgence I freely allow myself.

[Asami doesn't openly regard her any more peculiarly, but her moment of fixation is a little amusing to her. She breaks into a soft smile and shakes her head.]

Don't even worry about it. You know how much I would kill for some boar-q-pine jerky? It's not even a delicacy, but it's just so good.

[A small smile on Meliantha's face as well.]

I have no idea what that is, but if you like it, then you miss it. Maybe sometime we'll end up on your world and we can grab a bunch of it to bring back.

Is that how that works? [Asami shifts her weight to get comfortable.] I kind of thought we've been in the same world this whole time. But I guess anything is possible.

They said that the UE is stealing things from our worlds. Maybe at some point they'll send people to other people's worlds - me to yours, you to mine - to deal with those kinds of things. [A shrug.] It makes as much sense as any OTHER mission they've sent us on.
