[A video feed begins, displaying a small girl sitting on her bed in her apartment quarters. She's fiddling with the placement of her netbook as it records, but she doesn't seem to realize it's... filming upside-down. When she's erroneously confident it's pointed in the right direction, she crosses her arms and grins.]

Hello, everyone. My name is Toph Beifong! I'm a new person here, but if you're from my world, you've probably heard of me. Greatest earthbender who ever lived, pioneer of metalbending, celebrated war hero. Not to mention a wanted person for a while, too. And the star of a smash-hit play.

[she straightens up and tips her head, apparently pretty proud of all that.]

Anyway, I wanted to let everyone know that I'm blind, so I can avoid having to explain it to each of you every time we meet. But - don't think I'm asking for your help or anything either, I can get around fine with earthbending. Basically, just don't bother coming at me with any pictures or books or papers or whatever. I can't see them or read 'em.

[she pauses as if about to say something else, and then suddenly brightens.]

Oh! I was gonna say not to bother sending me text messages either... but actually, I was messing with this thing earlier and I found out it could read them to me! [As she says it, she waves her hands in the air excitedly.] I mean they gave me one with special buttons just for me, so that I'd be able to use it, which is so cool already, but I never thought it would read for me on top of it! How awesome is that?!

[very awesome, because she's all smiles now.] So, I guess that even though you basically kidnapped us right when we were ready to start relaxing... I should say thanks to you Initiative people, too. I can't really think of anyone ever giving me something like this! You know... something that I normally wouldn't be able to use, but it's fixed so I can. It's kinda nice.

Anyway, uh... nice to meet you all! [she reaches towards the camera again and the video ends.]

Yeeeah. About that. I know you're excited, but would you try not to get too crazy with it?

['Cause it makes her feel awkward as hell. Babies? Her?! And that means there had to be.. a guy.... NO we aren't going there.]

Um, you know. What Sokka was saying... we'll go back and it's gonna change time or whatever.

[ oh no she's being scolded by toph! how embarrassing. ]

You're right, I got a little ahead of myself... It's just crazy, you know. So what's the last thing you remember happening back home?

[ahem. awkwardness avoided.]

Umm, basically, we'd just finished the war. Aang beat the Fire Lord, Zuko was crowned as the new one, and we were all just hanging out for a few days after and relaxing and drinking tea.

[ She nods, even if Toph can't exactly see her attentiveness. Even still, the awkwardness isn't completely avoided. ]

Okay. So I won't mention anything about Republic City. Your camera is upside-down, by the way.

[barefootbender]

Oh, er.

[she fixes it.]

No problem. How're you liking your stay so far?

[barefootbender]

It's pretty okay, I guess. The rooms are sort of weird. There's all this weird stuff all over the place.

[chittybang]

Ohh yeah, I guess that will be a little challenging. But you at least know how to use the microwave, right?

[barefootbender]

Uhh... I don't know what that is. "Microwave"?

[chittybang]

It's only the greatest invention ever! [ You know, besides cars lulz. ] It's literally this box that instantly heats up your food. You have to try it.

[barefootbender]

A box that heats up food....? Like a stove?

[chittybang]

Yeah, like a stove, but a lot faster. I haven't quite figured out how it works, and I learned the hard way not to put metal inside of it, but either way it's pretty convenient.

[barefootbender]

No metal? So... what, just porcelain dishes only?

[that sounds kinda harsh. she knows the dishware her family had at home was pretty expensive...]

Well yeah, and plastic... I haven't tried a whole variety of things yet, it's just all I know is forks and aluminum foil don't fare well. There might've been a few accidents.

[She sort of frowns, because both incidents made the room stink up and that was embarrassing.] But hey, people like me make mistakes so that newcomers don't have to, right?

[barefootbender]

[Toph has no idea what plastic or forks or aluminum is, but ok.]

I guess so. I wouldn't have thought that a tiny magic oven couldn't handle metal, of all things. Metal's the stuff you're supposed to cook in, right?

Mm, I'm sure someone around here knows how the mechanics of a microwave work, so I'll let you know when I know. Just goes to show how much we're capable of learning in a few centuries!
