episode 1: Klever Komedy
March 1st, 10.32pm.
[ The feed, its operator unseen, opens up to a small apartment where a red-haired man is currently lying asleep on a couch. It’s about as interesting as watching sleeping people typically is: that is to say, not at all. Minimalistic movement is all that the subject of the video offers as a way of entertainment, with the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest being the highlight. Makes you wonder why a video is even necessary.
The reason makes itself apparent a couple of beats after--
Namely, there’s a telltale twitch, followed shortly by a low grunt of irritation and a long exhale that’s drawn out and squeezed to its maximum capacity. Predictably, the motions that follow shortly afterward are similarly sluggish, uncoordinated -- movement is an infliction that this man clearly does not want to deal with.
Stopping short of rolling right off the couch, he glances up. Catches sight of the camera, stares straight at the video. ]
. . . What are you doing?
[ Laughter sounds from the feed’s operator. ] Filming, filming, of course!
[ Another pause, and a sense of eye-rolling (if this man could be bothered to do such a thing) later, he rises to his feet. Using a heavy hand to sweep at his forehead and hair-- ]
And Kusanagi?
Still working on his thesis of HOMRA’s layout. He hasn’t moved yet.
[ The camera follows the original subject of the video as he moves towards the newly designated ‘Kusanagi’, who is busy at work with something at a desk. If there’s even a moment that’s taken to consider that maybe this may not be a good time to intrude, it’s not shown in the red-haired man’s demeanor and behavior.
The video suddenly zooms back as if to catch the entirety of the scene, as though something hilarious is about to go down and the operator is determined not to miss any of it. ]
Oi.
There are leftovers in the fridge. Heat those up for now. [ He makes an irritable gesture for him to let him be, before turning back to begin fervently writing again. It was pretty obvious what he had wanted, so he’s straight to the point.
The red-haired man’s hunger levels must be at epic proportions as there isn’t even a customary glare of irritation before he walks out of the video, likely in the direction of the kitchen. ]
How are the plans coming along, Kusanagi-san?
They should be done within the week. [ His answer is prompt, and they can be sure that he won’t be leaving his spot until they were completed. ] Th’ stools. . . They were about ten centimetres apart from each other, weren’t they? Either ten or nine point eight. An’ th’ dimensions of the shelves. . . They were definitely somewhere around . . . [ His voice trails off here, but he begins to jot things down again. ]
-- haha, Kusanagi-san really remembers everything about the bar!
[ Behind this conversation, there’s the sound of a fridge door opening and closing shut, the latter much louder and more ominous. Heavy footsteps come back around towards the recording scene.
Whatever Kusanagi’s answer was going to be is cut short with a gruff-- ]
There aren’t any.
Mm, I ate them a while ago!
Totsuka can cook for ya, then. I’m tryin’ ta concentrate here.
[ Cue red-haired man’s re-entrance into the video, his unwavering focus back on the camera and its mysterious operator. This gaze says, quite clearly: F O O D. ]
Alright, alright~! I’ll get on it. Any requests?
[ While everything thus far has been relatively peaceful, suddenly, it’s as if the sound of screeching tires can be heard, disrupting the flow of everyday traffic. ]
. . . Th’ paintings can’t be replicated. [ Unlike his calm and casual demeanour from before, while still expressionless -- there was now a particular threat in the way he held himself. ]
Aah? [ Yeah, he’s as confused as any viewer. Paintings? What the fuck? ]
A lot of the decor was imported, so we’re gonna have ta replace ‘em all with somethin’ else too. [ He just keeps going on and on. . .
But then, he realises, something is off. Having to peel his eyes from his work, he casually glances over his shoulder to finally notice that indeed, Totsuka had his tablet propped up and running. For a split moment, it’s as if everyday traffic is suddenly interrupted by the screeching of tires; the next, everything is back to complete normalcy. ]
HOMRA was a bar I ran back where we came from. Noticed you guys were lackin’, so I figured I might as well start it up here. [ Izumo slips into a business-like smile here, as if trying to dispel any impressions that had been conjured as a result of his prior banters.] If ya respond to this, that’s one drink on the house that ya can redeem. So think about stoppin’ by in the near future, yeah? It’ll be worth your time, promise.
[ Clearly speaking to the camera now. ] There we have it, an offer made directly by the one and only HOMRA bartender himself! Don't let this valuable once-in-a-lifetime offer slip away! And so, the bar HOMRA and its coolest bartender, Izumo Kusanagi-san, both look forward to your patronage!
... Oi. [ The beast continues to be ignored. If you haven’t been neglecting all the red, then you’ve been reading this post very wrong. ]
Oh! King's food-- [ He’s interrupted by a sudden soft thud. It may not be too audible, but the operator clearly hears it. The camera feed swings with its operator, looking towards the apartment’s door. ] Ah, a visitor? Hold up, I’m coming!
[ And the feed follows its operator towards the door, which opens to the sight of a mess of a soft cherry pink hair spread out on the ground and a large metal black cross. Upon closer inspection the person can see that its actually a person. A person that is making a soft moaning noise. ]
This... Is this - [ It's a female voice and it trails off into a soft whisper, but her discomfort can be clearly heard. Though, before she says anything else, her movements stop. ]
Huh? [ A hand reaches out to the girl, seeking her pulse, and then there’s an urgent cry. ] Kusanagi-san!
[ Saying that he was in a bad mood would be an understatement, but he knows that tone of urgency in Totsuka’s voice well enough not to take it lightly. Getting up from his chair for the first time since the havoc that was their morning — he makes his way over to the scene, taking only a brief second to properly assess the situation. Not hesitating for even a moment, he ushers Totsuka to the side. ]
Oi, get outta th’ way.
[ The feed is then quickly cut off, the Red King’s food to be eternally forgotten about. ]
