I used to have dreams like this.

Well, not exactly like this, I mean. Nothing so specific. But you know how it goes, don't you? Girl dislikes her situation, the way her life is going, the way people treat her, wishes she were anywhere else but there. Then a strange thing occurs, and there's this whole other world that needs her, specifically her. This place sees her for who she is, sees her strengths and the change she wants, and it tells her that she's needed to save this other world. Protect it. She's the only one who can. Like a hero, a ruler, or something else. That part changes pretty easily, I think.

There's a lot of stories like that, too, of course. I don't think I'm the only one who's had a dream like that. We all have our little unhappinesses. And sometimes the new kingdom, she loves it so much she never wants to go home. Sometimes being there just makes her miss everything she left behind, and she does everything she can to go back.

Of course, when I say I used to have dreams like this, that would mean I woke up from them, too.

I suppose this is like that. In a way. It's been almost three weeks now, but I guess I'm still trying to get used to it, that's all.

What were your dreams? Did you have them? Or do you, still? Whatever they are, or were, I hope you keep in mind that you can't trust them. There's no Truth to dreams.

Well its not so much a dream in the literal sense of the word but i sure had my fair share of daydreams about fantastic adventures id be able to embark on one day.

But mostly the kind where youre running for your life from large boulder traps after youve stolen some ancient and irreplaceable artifact.

Well ok it does kind of sound like that when i say it that way but really im thinking more along the lines of adventurer archaeologist.

[It has been almost three weeks. Kanaya remembers that figure before she even reads the post, and she remembers - their encounter. Meaningful would be an overstatement but she certainly wouldn't call it meaningempty. She thought sometimes during the next couple days about going over to pay Haruka a visit but that would have been too soon. Then by the week mark it would have been too long - since they'd only spoken the once and not ever after that... So she's glad to see network proof that several days in Haruka is continuing her unusually intelligent analysis of their situation through... books. Right. If suspicion were the first thing on Kanaya's mind when reading a Haruka post, this would raise it, but instead the opportunity to interact with her again is in that spot. Aha, books - finding some decent literature on Earth, that might be a good pretense to speak to her again.

But of course she's a polite troll. Got to address the actual topic of the post.]

Right now, I suppose it's easiest to say I'm still expecting to wake up from here. And monotonous and frustrating as life could be, where I was from, I miss mundane things. Stray things, like outfits. Or knowing the value of currency, and what can be bought with it, without even thinking about it. The way the air smells differently in fog to clear skies.

Oh, there's another. I miss the winter sun.

[She feels proud of having at least recommended Haruka one or two places to shop for clothes. Though not enough. Just the ones that happened on her route. Kanaya is a patron of half a dozen establishments scattered across the city. They almost meet her needs.

Haruka's a little budding laureate, after all, and knows she's an alien, probably even able to discern the insectoid angle; she'll figure it out. Kanaya wonders if she's a writer. (Maybe when they're friends, Haruka might even show Kanaya some of her work. Thats So Generous Of You Oh, it's nothing special, Kanaya. She would probably be modest about anything creative she did.

Rereading Haruka's comment to see if there's anything gaping she should incorporate into her reply, she notices one point of intrigue.]

A little forewarning would have been nice, that's for sure. I suppose I'm lucky enough, having had as much as I did at the time.

As for Winter, yes; it's one of the main four. The Earth is on an axis, you see, so when it orbits our sun, the variation in angle means that it receives more or less sunlight than other times in its orbit. Winter is when the hemisphere is angled to receive less sunlight. Days are shorter, and nights are longer. It's colder. Most of the plant life will have already withered, so there are very few flowers, and trees bear little more than rigid branches. Most animals retreat into hibernation.

Mornings, sometimes entire days, are full of fog. Moisture settles onto the everything during the night, and freezes, leaving behind frost. If it gets cold enough, rain freezes before it falls, and it can hail, or it can snow. If it's colder than that, snow will blanket the buildings and the ground in thick blankets.

The other times of year usually don't get cold enough for that, so it almost only ever snows in winter. Even if there are no clouds in the sky, it can be freezing temperatures on sunny days.

It's a little more interesting than endless rain, in any case.
