You know, can't say I really expected to be spending a birthday here. It happens with war, obviously this time we didn't exactly all volunteer.

[sigh, oh well, he rubs at his neck a little]

So, anyone care to join me for a pint? Or company, I don't mind, I could use some talk that isn't about all of.. well, this.

[straightens a little] I only mean what I say, everyone can see it. Something tells me we won't have to wait for long though after that last message.

[ She's quiet for a moment at that. ] No. I don't suppose we will.

I hope they'll allow you to put your talents to better use than fighting.

Being a former Army doctor gives you that advantage, so I'll do my best to help out while on the battlefield. That's a promise.

[after these weeks and months of training and knowing people, well.. he doesn't think he can allow himself to let anyone fall, even if he doesn't know them. part of being a solider.]

What have you been doing with your birthday, so far?

[he doesn't entirely see it that way, but they do need more trusted doctors. so he'll do what he can.]

So far? Couple of chats with mates with a pint here and there. Not entirely different from home.

Well, at least it hasn't ruined that for you. I'm glad.

[ pauuse. she's not the greatest at small talk, really. ]

And - the clinic is going well?

No, that it hasn't.

[and he's pleased by that!]

That's right, I'm starting to get really use to the updated technology here. And the Initiative haven't exactly kicked us out for what we're doing which is good.

If they tried to kick you out, I think they'd find they had a problem on their hands. [ a problem named Roslyn Small. ]

The updated technology sounds interesting. I'd like to take a closer look sometime.

I'm sure they would. [except he's thinking few upset recruits.]

You're free to, I may be able to show you and tell what some do but anything further you'd have to ask one of the Initiative helpers.

Hobbies? [ a blank pause, like she's trying to remember what that is. ] I fish. Sometimes.

And cross stitch.

Fishing? Never really tried to fish, doubt I'd be any good.

[he probably couldn't be that patient]

Made anything with cross stitch?

It's fairly simple. That's the joy of it, really. [ beat. She shrugs. ] I had a stressful job.

Nothing since coming here. Or for a while before coming here.

[doctorly]

I wonder if there's any chance at fishing here. [the sea is probably a bit ways off though]

There's hardly any time to enjoy yourself here, not with the thought of war always around the corner.

No fish in the sea. [ there's a touch of wistfulness to it. ]

It is a problem. If there were some sort of regular schedule, you could get more used to the idea. Know when you were able to relax and when you needed to get ready.

[doctorly]

A shame then.

[nods] I think the same. A schedule would keep things organized, instead we're left in the dark without knowing at what time we'll be forced to go fighting. It puts more weight than what's needed on someone.

[ a moody stare at her glass for a moment, and then, almost cautiously. ]

So do you have hobbies?

[doctorly]

Not really. ..Typing something on my blog now and again sorta became a hobby though, in a way.

It was originally to help me after the war, but after meeting .. Sherlock, only then did I find something to write about. Which was just the cases we worked on.

I wasn't aware you were a veteran?

I am, I got shot in my shoulder while at war.
