[Duncan looks much grubbier than usual, a few smudges on his forehead and his armor dusty.]

It's odd how quickly we adapt to the conveniences of this place. I never thought I'd say I was looking forward to returning to my quarters and the shower there.

It looks as though there have been several new arrivals recently. My name is Duncan. If there are any of you from worlds with less advanced technology than this one, I will be willing to assist you with any questions. I know it's a difficult learning curve at first.

[Private to Gordon] I have something I want to show you. I don't want to discuss it further on the device. May I meet you at the lab?

[He realizes that he may be taking a large chance, except that in some cases, this is exactly the sort of things alliances are built upon, one has to give trust in order to gain it.

He clasps his wrist in the shake and turns his attention to his belt, one of the many pouches there.]

I appreciate your willingness to meet me at short notice.

[Before he shows him what he has palmed, he feels the need to clarify a few things.]

What I'm about to show you was attained through no small risk on the part of myself and an associate. We will be sharing this information with the Initiative. [For reasons.]

However, I want one of us knowing what this is all about, too. Will you be able to test something without their awareness? More importantly, will you be willing?

[At great risk...? Just what the hell did he pick up? Gordon glances over his shoulder and then murmurs a little lower.]

...Yeah, I can do that.

[He's too curious to refuse, and besides the other lab monkeys probably won't notice anyway.]

[He offers him a small vial.]

We obtained this in United Earth territory. I could have stolen many more of these than I did. Everyone I searched was carrying it. I don't know what it is, only that if so many of them have it, it's bound to be important.

[He takes up the vial and squints through it.]

You found these on the citizens, or the Masked?

Citizens. We were never able to get close enough to the Masked to take anything from them. Nathaniel thinks that might be a drug.

[He frowns thoughtfully.]

That place is...strange. Excessively strange even by the standards here. The people are... I don't know if I have an adequate way to describe it. Docile, perhaps. Excessively docile aside from the Masked patrols.

[His eyebrows furrow as he curls his fingers around the vial.]

...Kind of like they're in a trance, maybe? Walking in their sleep?

Perhaps not quite that pronounced. Nothing seemed to bother them. They didn't notice much. When we bumped into them, it took a little to get any sort of reaction.

[Ideal for pickpocketing, damned strange for anything he's used to.]

That certainly sounds like they're dosing these people with something... Something so addictive that they issue personal emergency doses for their convenience.

How considerate of them.

That's their job, isn't it? [ she looks a little annoyed to be reminded of that embarrassing misstep, though. ] They were competent enough.

Having a job is only the first part of it.

I'm glad they helped. Some of the healers are from my world.

[she chuckles a little.]

You haven't always enjoyed showers?

Actually no. We don't have anything like that in my world. If you want a hot bath of any sort, you boil the water over a fire, and you're never going to have much of it.

Ah...I suppose that's when mages come in handy. [cause they make fire. also mages are totally a common thing around her world.]

They seem a bit like goblin-made devices. Although mine hasn't broken yet.

You've been on a journey?

Yes, gone for a few days. My associate will be making more of an official announcement soon. We went on a scouting mission.

Scouting? [ He considers this. ] Into the United Earth?

Oh, you look like you've been roughing it.

A bit, yes. [His expression enough to give the impression of comical understatement.]
