Is this truly the state of the world?

[Gilgamesh asked the machine while not realizing it was on, wondering if he was simply being shown a farce of the Earth. The reality of the world around him sunk in quickly, but he seemed a little disappointed. The King stood in the middle of the street, holding his tablet in one hand and visible in the corner of the screen he held a golden crown with a jeweled ring attached to the front of it.]

So few survivors left. With this artifact being the only interesting thing presented to me...

[His teeth clenched and his expression hardened.] What a torrid vacation. The degradation of the world is no surprise, but these spoils are a disappointment. At the very least, I would have preferred to see the 'end' of civilization as it happened rather than being inclined to save it in its aftermath.

I, Gilgamesh, shall oversee this.

[ What in the name of God... ]

[ Saber's already having a fairly rotten day in this land, what with a doppelganger with her face making a mockery of her in public. Now this? She can't approach this man in the same manner she did with the other woman.

Calming herself, she tries to not let her emotions get the best of her. Shirou's taught her to be open, to be more herself, but all of that is dismissed in favor of standing tall before this man. ]

[This one was looking at him angrily--and that sort of expression was one he usually found himself dissatisfied with immensely. In Saber's case, because he hadn't yet seen Excalibur get drawn, he regarded her as another peon.]

What foolish reason do you have for giving me such an expression, woman? If you live and breathe, you'll do so at my heel and remove that look in haste.

I will do no such thing.

[ Her glare softens just a bit at his request though due to her manners. ]

Have you no recollection of our final battle?

Don't be so quick to assume I know of you. Those who I do battle with are not forgotten so easily.

[Though, her general assumption was suspicious. Gilgamesh was listening raptly.]

[ So he doesn't remember? Her demeanor shifts into a less hostile one, but her guard remains raised. ]

You were a participant of the Fourth Holy Grail War, yes?

The Holy Grail... [Irritated, Gilgamesh realized this was the second time he'd addressed the topic.]

I've only recently heard of this battle, yet it already sounds nothing short of a disappointment.

[ So he has no recollection of any of it? That leaves her dumbfounded and even with her battle instinct kicking in, there's nothing she can say to make up for her hostility besides the obvious. ]

... You have my apologies.

[Well, that's a shocker. Gilgamesh calms considerably, the hostility leaving his face.

At the very least, he'll allow more conversation because of that apology.]

Very well. Explain yourself, then.

We were opponents in the Fourth Holy Grail War.

[ Since he's asked, he'll get an answer. ] I was summoned under the title of Saber.

[Saber. She was the Servant of the redheaded lad who he wanted to hit earlier for some reason. Even though the guy was being moderately respectful. Maybe he just had a punchable face.]

...And, what was my 'title'?

[ Everyone wants to punch Shirou, join the club. ]

Archer. [ Despite all of those swords. ]

[Well, that wasn't too surprisingly.]

It isn't particularly shocking. Though, I don't entirely favor the bow anymore.

How fortunate. You did not use a bow whenever you fought.

[ #nasulogic. ] You seemed to prefer swords.

[Just as Saber would only ever put aside Excalibur to gain an advantage with a spear, Gilgamesh learned not to burden himself by relying on the strength of the Axe of the Road or Enki's reliable aim. Both could perish in an instant, after all--and they were temporal weapons.]

It is my assumption that you would not be summoned to do combat with me without your own preparation. Am I to believe that this battle summoned worthy adversaries capable of giving me challenge?

If you mean the ones who are meant to be your allies, possibly. There are those here capable of acts unlike any you have heard of. [ Not that she'll call any of them gods, but they do have impressive magic at their fingertips. ] As for the enemy...

Well, they would have not called you forth if they had no use of your power. Surely you will encounter someone worth your time.

[ If not anyone else here, there's a shining example of someone who can hold her own staring him down. ]

You do not know what I have witnessed in my time, Saber. Perhaps your limited scope is sufficient for a comparison, but do not make the mistake of believing my limits are so sound.

[Still, Gilgamesh was a bit interested. The world around him was stale and decrepit--yet there were so many warriors in such a small place.

It was interesting enough.]

Still, it would be a waste to discard them--these variants. Ahh. If you turn out to be worthy of me as well, I may consider a kinder rule.

Is that a challenge?

[ Not that she feels she should accept it so readily so there will be a bit of reluctance shown not only in her tone, but the manner of her posture. ]

May not be so wise without the presence of your Master.

You make a mistake in that assumption, Saber.

[Gilgamesh raised himself, his expression dull and bored. The worst case scenario was a Gilgamesh unrestricted by the Archer class.]

I am no Servant. I was brought here directly from the Throne.

Directly from the throne? [ That's impossible, she insists in her mind. It explains what he's said thus far, but so much remains unanswered. ] You have no recollection of fighting in any Holy Grail War as a result of that.

... But how can you sustain yourself as an ordinary Servant?

Because, I am no mere Servant. I am a pure spirit, Saber.

Therefore, so long as I am 'Gilgamesh' and not a 'title', then I am the same as if I were alive. [In particular, he smiled. Saber was likely constrained by her class as he suspected that system would restrict them.]
