By the Gregorian calendar and by astronomical year numbering. There will be other new years in the coming months, I'm finding out.

I wanted to play you the recording of this song. I've never heard it before. Can you imagine the people of Earth, before the wars that created Exsilium, singing this song? It's a lovely picture.

I cannot imagine a time where Terra was not at war.

[ Laisa looks thoughtful. ] I wasn't able to find any story behind it. The song is simply about drinking with old friends in memory of times gone by. It wasn't restricted to the passing of the year, but this is a traditional time to sing it.

Are you from Terra originally?

[priad]

My people were, yes. I am from the Reef Stars, personally.

Personally, I preferred the minute or so before we started singing the song... during the traditional sloppy, drunken kiss.

[laisa]

[ A chuckle. ] I hope sloppy and drunken were optional.

[gamblinman]

Definitely optional, though it's traditional to get roaring drunk on New Year's. And the sloppiness is pretty much a result of that.

Were people very excited about the year changing?

[gamblinman]

Yeah, I guess. It's traditional to make New Year's resolutions, but most people don't usually stick to them.
