[ Except that’s not actually how he says it, it’s more like: munneh in cards and sayin’ me rifle’s been changed. Sheffield, Yorkshire haunts the streets of Exsilium now, thanks to one Richard Sharpe. ]

The only cards I know of are those given by weasely merchants looking ta fleece more money out of you. But you ain’t asking for money, are you? Yer asking me to fight with me blood and sweat, and you ain’t even decent enough to give me a half-ration of rum, or even a proper King’s shilling.

[ Thud. The sound of rifle on stone ground. There’s a soft shuffling sound and tapping of fingers on the screen of the tablet. The video switches on. ]

Me name’s Richard Sharpe. [ Blond hair, green eyes, a scar on his upper left cheek. His lips are twisted into a scowl, and at the edge of the screen, you can see the edge of his Rifleman’s jacket. Have a picture.

If you met him during the masquerade, he's a lot cleaner now. Face-wise anyway. You can actually see what he looks like underneath the layers of dirt, and his hair isn't just a layer of dust anymore. ]

If yer name's Patrick Harper, I suggest you get yer arse over here before I shoot it off you.

They call them marques. I don't use them much myself but only because it is easier to carry the cards than it is the coins.

[ cheerfully: ] Nope!

[The camera's recording a young boy--looking maybe around the age of twelve--with a skeptical expression on his face and resting his chin in his hand. He probably doesn't look quite normal, with the odd coloration of his hair (dark purple) and eyes (red) and his pointed ears.]

I decided to ask for the money in coins. The card seemed too strange.

There's a familiar look about you. [ a beat. ] But nevermind it.

You are asking for far too much from such gracious hosts.

( She smiles, looking off screen. What'd be contemplative looks off into the distance in person translates to distract-ability on camera. )

All things told, I've been on worse battlefields. This one's kind enough to let us off leash as long as we don't mind being stranded on an exile's island.

( Light glints off a band at her neck, too thick to be any standard jewelry -- perhaps it was a different style. All this time, and she still wears that collar. )

So you say. [ He leans forward a little bit. ] There's plenty o' people I know who does nothin' at all in their lives, and yet they pretend ta be so important. At least yer honest 'bout it.

[ He tips his hat slightly. ]

That's a pretty name, ma'am.

[ His eyes are drawn to the collar immediately. He's seen the like, aye, but not ever on someone whose skin is as light as hers. ]

I didn't know there's slavers here. [ He tips his own head back, taps the collar. ]

[ Barked laugh. ]

It ain't hard ta lift a gun and pull a trigger, no, but it's plenty hard ta actually hit yer target. [ He shifts his rifle up. He's been polishing it while answering the post, and it gleams slightly now. ] That is if you don't fall right over from her kick.

[ He's distracted by how you look, sorry. ]

Pardon me, but are you an elf or imp or some sort? [ Well, he's met one of either, so yeah. ]

[ He's really good at threats actually, so thank ye, sir.

But now he just snorts, raising his rifle to the camera so the stranger can look at it more carefully. ]

This looks like a bow ta you? [ Beat. ] Sir?

[ Can't hurt to be polite. ]

I ain't making japes, whatever those are. [ Dry. What the hell is your vocabulary, Cat. ]

Just sayin' what I see.

[ A snort. ]

Aye? What do you know of them, 'sides from what they've already said?

( It takes Sakura a moment to realize he's talking about her collar. Her hand comes up, brushing against where the 10C had once been engraved. She forgets what the worn down numbers now read.

Her lips curl up into a lopsided smile that dies miles short of her eyes. )

Neither did I. ( Her hand pulls back, one finger tapping the collar itself. ) This old thing's a souvenir.

( She supposes the UE, as construed by the Initiative and the network, is a nation of slavers -- mental enslavement was tantamount the sorts of slavery found riddled through human history. )

[Oh, that's awkward--he's never been asked that so bluntly before. He fidgets with his hands for a moment, but sighs, deciding it's best to be honest.]

Sort of. I'm what your people call a demon. [And then he quickly adds...] But I'm not interested in attacking people or leading souls astray or anything like that.
