I can't be the only person who comes from a place, where for the most part... elves, fae, bogarts, and all such manner of creatures are something that you hit over the head with a poker before you befriend? Honestly.

[No, she's not afraid to admit, doesn't care who reads it. They're empathy lacking monsters as far as that goes for home.]

Not that that applies to all worlds, obviously, I'm not an idiot -- and was raised with better manners mind you. But I doubt that I'm alone in this.

[Says the governess related to Death of all things -- but that's different. Death is supposed to be a killer, and she's also fairly sure he's capable of more empathy than most people would ever imagine. He spared her father for her after all.

But she's worried, all the same. Just because their worlds are round it doesn't mean it can be that different. It was an oddly isolating feeling when the things you knew to be true were turned upside down. Again.]

I imagine most of the time, not attacking on sight things that can do all manner of awful things to you if you annoy them is an evolutionary advantage.

And believe me, where most fae of my world are concerned, all you have to do is be good at something, and they'll kidnap you.

I'm used to the kind that steal children, bewitch humans, that enjoy human suffering because they... well I have no idea what they think of human suffering, I happen to have the emotions they lack -- just that they like to cause it. They're parasites with no ability of their own that feed off human's ability to create, and then when they grow bored of it, throw it away to wander the wastes of the fairy realms. Like so much unwanted trash.

... Do I need to go on, or is that enough? [there's a sigh.] Everything else -- even the vampires, trolls, dwarves, even if they crush and destroy, that at least have empathy. That's more than you can say for fae.

Does that matter?

It matters as far as knowing the difference just in case something does turn up that isn't so... friendly.

Anyone you meet may be a villain. You say that the elves you meet here may be good, so it tells us nothing to say they may be bad as well.

And the elves where you're from are equally as heartless as these fae? Humans are the only 'good' beings?

No, not just humans. Vampires, trolls, dwarves. I went to school with a troll and a dwarf, they were my friends. We all work hard to overcome the old bias about the different races. A lot of the vampires are black ribboners now, they've replaced human blood, have stable jobs. [shrug] Nor would I argue are they completely good, any of us. [she'd seen battlefields, seen war, seen just how foul and loathsome humans could be -- they were awful. The worst sorts of things imaginable sometimes.] ... But yes, elves and fae... they're parasites, where I am from.

But what would you do were a child being threatened? Stand there and discuss its moral standpoint with a being that doesn't even know what a moral standpoint is?

They may do -- but I'd argue being here changes a lot of rules, and a lot of our old... alignments. Which, I just learned my lesson about taking things at face value where elves are concerned at least. They're not as they are for me at home.

[She knows that... where at least she's concerned, she can force herself to dig into people's minds. Not so much thoughts, but intentions. It's not always pleasant, but it can be done. Perhaps that's why it doesn't occur to her.]

Still, don't you think more information is better? When as you say, we know nothing about when and where and what? At least you know now, if anything from the place called the Discworld... appears, and it happens to be an elf, you shouldn't trust it. [she's curious, he raises a valid point, and she'd like to hear the rest of it.]

Exactly. To me, mostly, all creatures at the same. This just happens to be the exception. Even then I guess at least their destructive habits are... pure. They don't bother to justify it, like everything else seems to. Nor are they the worst I've ever heard of, and not everything that comes out of the faerie realms is bad. [The discworld and its realms are just so... fun.] ... Are you going to hurt anyone? Who doesn't attack you first of course, I'll assume with the missions here, we're all going to hurt someone eventually. [it's her small attempt at a joke. She's trying to be less... well, yes.]

The faerie realms being different than your own? [Sounds familiar, in a disturbing way.] No one, innocent, no. If you haven't been on one of their damned missions yet, then how long have you been here?

Yes. It's smaller one. There are a few others, and there are points and places where the different realms can... cross over. [Oddly, knowledge of it made adjusting to this place easier.] Then I don't have a problem in the slightest... and no more than a few weeks... maybe almost a month now?

Yes, sometimes you get idiots that deliberately open the different realms but... it's rare.

[Susan shrugs again.] It's... not worse here for me, different. But... equally as troubling. Perhaps I'll think differently later.

They do this without any reason for it?

I find it hard to imagine that this place becomes any less troubling than it already is. If you truly think otherwise then what you're asking for is complacency.

Well... they do it for the usual reasons... glory, power, sometimes money. It's all a bit foolish in the end, because they inevitably bite off more than they can chew really.

... It's a bit of a long story, but travelling through dimensions to fix problems that other people make isn't exactly... new to me, or my family. [never mind the messes she'd made herself.] I don't know about complacent though, I don't like sitting around when something is wrong.

Where I'm from, they didn't exist at all, save for on the pages of dull fantasy novels.

A lot of people believe that where I come from as well -- but usually that's because they can't see them anyway.

[Short 'Hmn' sound.] It sounds very similar to the Fade then. All of it, in at least some way. The Fade is the world of dreams from my own world. But spirits and demons reside there. I suppose they are something like your elves and fae but.. [Nah, let's steer away from that.] Anyways, it's still... [A short search for the right word.] ...surprising to hear of places with similarities to others.

But what are you saying then? That you approve of their methods?

No, well not completely... mostly its that humans have a completely inability to perceive that which they can't understand.

Of course, from time to time, they will force themselves back into a humans perception. In my case, I... chose when I don't want to be seen.

A world of dreams? [Susan gets comfortable in a chair in her room, arms crossed, thinking again.] It's interesting to me too -- I mean all your worlds sound completely different to mine in one obvious regard, I'm still working out the others. [she drummed her nails against her arm.] Do you have... Gods or Personifications that rule over The Fade?

No. I, in short hate when it happens to me, I get sucked into something because I'm the best suited after the person that's meant to be doing it -- and he just acts up all the time. But it just means... I'm used to it. This is just a little more indirect I suppose. [maybe for that, it's a little more merciful.]

Not... exactly. At one time the Maker did, or so the Chantry claims. But now it is divided into territories that demons themselves rule.
The Fade and my own world is divided by the Veil. Mostly, people only cross the Veil and visit the Fade in their dreams or when they go to the Fade in death. But some are... more attuned to the Fade than others.

So tell me then, is your world as corrupt as this one to the point that only sending others through time can help it?
