Oh! Andaran atish’an! This is such an interesting way to talk to people, don't you think? I can see your face and you can see mine! It's like a mirror, but it reflects other people back at you.

[Merrill waves, smiling broadly, her large eyes sparkling with delight.]

My name is Merrill, and I'm looking for my friends. I appear to be a little lost. [She swings the tablet around too fast to really see anything useful. Just a lot of stone.] Did you see that? I'm lost. But I have friends who can help me become, ah, not lost.

Sometimes, when I was lost in Kirkwall, Isabela - she's one of my friends - would swoop down from the top of a building and tell me where to go. She's very pretty, with dark hair and a lovely blue bandana. Oh, and a necklace. It's quite hard to miss her necklace and what's below it. And there's Aveline, but sometimes I worry she doesn't like me. She has red hair, like the sun, and quite a lot of freckles. I like her freckles. I wish I had freckles... [Merrill trails off, tapping her fingers against her cheeks as if counting freckles. She comes back to herself suddenly.] I'm sorry, I tend to get lost in my thoughts. I think that's how I ended up here. Do you ever do that? You start thinking and then you just don't come out. What was I saying before?

Oh, yes, my friends! I have quite a few of them. Isabela and Aveline and Varric! Varric is a dwarf, and he's very funny, but his stories aren't always true. He tells me stories about pirates, but Isabela says they're mostly made up. And Fenris, he's elvhen, like me, but--that's not going to be trouble, is it? In Kirkwall, they make us live in alienages, and they're very dirty. I had a nice house, but it was very small. No one in Thedas seems to like the elvhen very much, and living in the alienage is very uncomfortable...

[She stares past the tablet screen for a moment, thoughtful.] I hope there aren't any alienages here...

If you know my friends, would you tell them I'm looking for them? Ma serannas for your troubles. Or, if you recognize this place-- [She ducks out of the frame, an alleyway filling the screen for a few seconds before she fumbles the tablet and then drops it. Merrill's face pops into the frame again, a worried expression on it.] Oh, dear, I hope I haven't broken you...

No! No. He didn't take them. Well, he did. But with my permission. I gave him some things. He said he was the Champion? I don't know if that means anything to you.

That's Hawke! Kirkwall named Hawke their Champion when he saved us from the qunari. I think the qunari just wanted a place to live, though. They seemed very sad and angry. Maybe because their ships were destroyed and no one wanted to let them stay. That would make me sad and angry, too.

Yeah. I think that would make anyone sad. No one wants to be somewhere they're not wanted.

You said Hawke saved you, right? Did the, uh. "Qunari" do something?

They invaded.

Hawke killed their arishok. I didn't see it, of course, Hawke didn't bring me. [That's not bitterness in her voice, not at all, she isn't upset that she was left behind, nooo.] But Fenris said it was a great battle, and Fenris doesn't give out compliments often. Varric says he makes you work for them, but that seems silly, because you can't sell compliments for food.

I think he probably meant it more as a figure of speech.

Speech has figures? Like Isabela's? She has a very nice figure, all the men are always staring at her chest.

... No. Not–Not like that. It's, um. More of a... well. Okay. Look. You've heard of the phrase "fish out of water", right? It's like that. They don't actually mean a fish. It's figurative, like saying something and not meaning the literal meaning.

Do they not have that sort of thing in England? Scotland. Wherever... you're from?

But why would you say something you don't mean? And you shouldn't take fish out of water unless you want to eat them. They don't do well on land.

Is England a country in Thedas? Is that where you're from? The Dalish don't really have a home, we just travel from city to city. Sometimes we stay a while, but the humans always get mad when we stay too long.

I don't think anyone will get mad at you here. So far most people have been pretty nice and I haven't seen many people live outside of the main building. Not that you can't. I mean, I'm sure you can but I haven't seen many people... do that.

And I'm not English, by the way.

The Dalish live where we can. [There's a breezy smile in her voice. She doesn't sound bitter at all.]

Oh, but then why would you ask? What is English? Is it a place? A person? Is it related to England? A land of Engs?

It's a place in my world, I guess. England, that is. It's where English people come from and uh, they all have accents similar to yours. Well, actually, yours sounds like a different country but... [He laughs, nervously.]–that's not important.

Oh! Right. My name. I'm Martin. Martin Gallagher.

I knew someone named Martin. He was a friend of Isabela's, though I don't suppose he was very friendly in the end... He sold a few things to Hawke, once. It's very nice to meet you Martin. Perhaps when I get myself un-lost, I can visit you and Hawke.

[Oh, he sounds so happy at that.] Yeah! That'd be great. I look forward to it, Merrill.
