So Vanadi's hosting the big Masquerade Ball later this month, and that got me to thinking...

( Collette starts ticking things off on her fingers. )

There's no age limit, everyone's going to be wearing a mask and in costume, there's no supervision, and one of the most common questions out of new people showing up here is "where's the nearest bar," so it'll also have alcohol. Lots of it.

( Collette leans forward, chin resting on her interlaced hands, elbows on the table. She grins. )

This is so much better than Prom would ever be.

[He brings up a few pictures he took from searches and other things on his tablet and shows it to her. It was a bit limited, given that he was still learning his way around the device, but it was probably enough to give some ideas.]

I think the easiest for me to do is one kind of fabric down to the knees, then use another, lighter one to fan out, so I don't have to worry about as many intricate cuts. As for color...

[He takes a moment to study her. C'mon, all that time spent in Fashion Club, don't fail him now...]

Most would suit you, but I'd say something along the lines of green.

( She grins at his declaration. )

Good thing green happens to be my favorite color. I look good in green.

( She winks... and thinks she does look pretty good in green. For a crocodile. )

How much is it going to fan out? Also, what about up on top? I don't think we have coconuts or sea-shells around here.

( Unless a few laden African Swallows have flown in recently... )

[Huh. Got lucky. That was half a complete guess.]

Depends on how much you want it. I think the top I can just extend from the tail to make a one-piece dress. You want it strapless or no?

Uh, straps please.

( Strapless dresses sound like way more of a hassle than she wants to deal with. Considering her upper body is far more active, what if the strapless part doesn't stay in place?

Gotcha. Straps are the easy part, at least.

[Part of him wanted to advocate strapless but his rational side quickly put down that though.]

I'm gonna have to take a few measurements to get this done, if it's alright with you.

( Of course! Measurements! This isn't new to her, since working with some seamstresses trying to get an extra morph suit ready for the future. )

Are you going to need a hip measurement? Because we should probably head back to my room if you are. Trust me, it's easier in the long run.

It'd probably be best if I do, yeah.

[He produces a simple measuring tape from his jacket that he had picked up from a local shop.]

It shouldn't take long.

( He has a magic jacket. Collette's amused and impressed that he came so seriously prepared. It gives her an even better feeling that she made the right decision in asking him to help her with what she thought of as an amusing costume. Had this been Halloween in truth, she'd have figured out a way to go as a skiier after an accident for the personal heartbreak and amusement.

Nodding in outward understanding, she sends herself coasting toward her room, figuring he'd keep page well enough. )

It usually doesn't. It's just measuring! You should probably be careful with shoulder to waist rations, or something like that. I'm broader than you'd expect.

( She grins, though given how she's looking forward and not to the side, the expression may be lost. )

There's just not as much maneuvering room around me when I'm on wheels. When did you get into sewing?

( All this while she turns herself around and prepares to lock wheels and transfer to her bed. )

[It pretty much is. He keeps way too much stuff in there.]

So long as I get the numbers, it should be fine. [Well, get the numbers and not screw up with them, but he's supposed to be at least somewhat confident in his abilities, here.]

Started when I was six or so. I didn't exactly have parents to stitch up clothes for me, so I learned how. Eventually it got to scarves and stuff for cold months, but it wasn't until last year until I really got into it with the local exchange student from France.

You're an orphan? Who'd you live with, growing up?

( What is tact for five-hundred. )

I've been meeting more and more people who don't have parents and aren't, like, parent age themselves around here.

( Oomph -- and transferred to the bed with a huff and bounce or three. Collette rolls over onto her side and works on moving further onto the bed to sit up and arrange her legs into something comfortable and supportive. )

Ooph! You'd probably -- have liked to meet James. Ah-hah! There, I'm ready for my close-up.

( Said with a wink. )

[Minato's lived with it enough to not be bothered by the question.]

It varied. Went from relative to relative, sometimes spent a while at an orphanage. Eventually I just ended up on my own in a dorm.

[He shrugs, dismissing the topic as he approaches her and starts taking the necessary measurements. He notes them on his tablet as he goes.]

Is James a friend of yours?

Sounds like you have a bit of family all around. Was this dorm part of a boarding school? That's got to be better than ending up in a hospital wing.

( She pulls a face, wrinkling her nose. The smile comes back as she thinks about James. Collette keeps herself fairly still, though she watches what Minato does with active interest. )

He's kind of the man where I'm from. Our leader, you know? The guy who looks out for you, regardless of if you need it or not. He's just like that.

Eh, They were distant family, at best. But the school was a normal high school; the dorm was a separate building elsewhere funded by the group that funded the school.

[He has to stop every so often to remember which measurements to take and where, but other than that it won't take too long.]

Hm. Yeah, I could probably get along with him. Sounds like a great guy.

That sucks.

( It really does, in her opinion. )

Family's one of the greatest things you can have at your back. That, or really good friends. Have you got those?

( She winks. This measurement business is mildy amusing. )

I can always lend you James if he shows up around here.

Friends? Yeah, I got those, at least.

[He can't help but smile. Boy, did he have friends.]

So I guess I can't complain.

[He's about finished with the measurements now; he's writing down the last of them.]

...Wait, Lend me him? I thought he was the leader-type.

( She grins. )

Hey, you can complain all you want, that's anyone's right, but you can't go around feeling truly alone. That's a pretty cool thing, in my opinion.

( Friends are the best. Maybe even because most of the time, you got to pick them, not just be foisted off on them by a twist of fate. Phil didn't think of me like that, you're just being silly. And she was, but the thought stayed like a small stone, rolling around in the pit of her stomach. )

He is! Doesn't mean he can't get a few more friends along the way. Besides, I bet you both would get along well. You're sensible, and he's sensible, and you're both capable of who even knows what, and he likes music, and... do you like music?

Music? Yeah, I listen to music from time to time.

[Read: pretty much constantly when not talking to people.]

Be sure to tell me if he shows up, then.

[He puts away the measuring tape and tablet.]

That should be it. I should have it done sometime before that party.

I will! And that's great, but did you figure out how much I'm going to owe you?

( Leaning back on her hands, firmly planted on the bed behind her. )

Well, since I figure that I'm not going to be able to get things like silk and fancy cloth here, I figure not all that much. If you want, just give me how much you want to spend and I'll give back whatever I don't use.

Hmm, are you going in the next day or two?

Probably, I dunno. Depends on how busy I am.

[Though, given this place, there's not much to be busy with at the moment.]

If you don't think you'll be too busy, I can just give you my card.

( Wise decisions with strangers? Or limits on how much can be withdrawn at once? )

The coins are a bother to lug around everywhere, but you'll need them if you wander outside the main Hold marketplace or the proper stores close to here. The small, out of the way places are all marques only or barter for goods.

[He's touched that she'd allow him to use that, but he still has to ask.]

You'd actually trust me with your card?

Of course! For one, you don't strike me as the kind of guy who'd be a total jerk like that. For another? It's just money. Not having to pay rent on this place means it's for the luxuries and stuff anyway when I've already got a full pantry.

( Of rice and pasta.

Shut up it's a fool-proof plan. )

What's the worst you can do?

( It's not like she knows two prosecuting attorneys or several officers of various sorts of laws or anything... )

Yeah, you're right about me. I couldn't betray someone if I tried.
