So Vanadi's hosting the big Masquerade Ball later this month, and that got me to thinking...

( Collette starts ticking things off on her fingers. )

There's no age limit, everyone's going to be wearing a mask and in costume, there's no supervision, and one of the most common questions out of new people showing up here is "where's the nearest bar," so it'll also have alcohol. Lots of it.

( Collette leans forward, chin resting on her interlaced hands, elbows on the table. She grins. )

This is so much better than Prom would ever be.

No. [But Colls this sounds like some dumb grown-up thing and that's totally lame!!] I don't... really like parties. Not going sounds like the best way to make it fun.

Personally I like bonfires best, but it's a little exciting to think we get a chance to dress up and watch people be silly for a while. I take it people watching isn't your favorite thing to do? How about stopping by for some of the free food, then leaving if it's really boring?

I do enough people watching on my own; I don't need to go to some dumb ball for that. [huff] But I guess I could go and have some cake... if it's even any good. I bet it's not.

Tell you what -- if the cake's a total bust, we'll go get decent cake right away. If it's not... maaaybe we can all stay and see if any of the other baked goods are worth eating.

Well... I guess that would be okay. As long as I don't have to dance or anything.

No enforced dancing, I promise! Not unless you end up wanting to go for a spin.

Any thoughts on if you want to dress in costume, or stick to just finding a mask?

I'll just wear one of my dresses, I think. A costume would be more trouble than this party is probably worth, and everyone seems to think I'm wearing one all the time anyway.

It's because you dress a whole lot more complexly than any of us do, outside of... you know, I think outside of Big Red and a few other ladies who're like you. Looking good in dresses and everything! Have you thought about what kind of mask goes with what you wear?

Well, it's normal back home. After all, a queen has to look... [She wrinkles her nose and waves her hand vaguely.] Regal, I guess. I dunno about the mask, though, just as long as it doesn't look silly.

I'm sure we can find or make a perfectly regal one suiting any sort of queen you want to be while you're here. If you even want to be one! Who knows, for a night you could be... a knight?
