[So... monsters.

As if being transported back into time against your will and being basically forced to fight humans wasn't bad enough, coming back to what is supposed to be 'home' for now to find it crawling with monsters isn't exactly good for Byakuya's temper.

He's been good, he avoided killing as many people as possible during the mission because he didn't want to be involved. Monsters, though, he has no qualms about those. They even look like Hollows, in a way, and are clearly just beasts.

This one is big, though. So it requires a little more firepower than what he has been using so far.

He unsheathes his word and extends his arm, blade directed downwards ... and drops the sword, which disappears into the ground, as if swallowed by it.]

Bankai.

[The area around him darkens as giant blades erupt from the ground, framing him.]

Chire, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi.

[The blades seemingly explode into a multitude of what looks like cherry blossom petals... but they clearly are not, since the beast starts writhing in pain and bleeding from what appear to be multiple cuts to vital points.

And then, a silhouette appears behind Byakuya. A samurai wearing a mask that hides his entire face. The silhouette is half transparent, and Byakuya's eyes widen as he turns around to face it, beast enemy momentarily forgotten.]

... Senbonzakura?

[The silhouette appears to look in Byakuya's direction. Just before it fades away again, a single word is caught by the feed.]

'Master!'

((OOC: There are millions of blades the size of a flower petal floating in the wind in the area around Byakuya and the monster. He is usually in perfect control of them, but something surprising happened, so if you'd like your character sliced up a little - or a lot - feel free to make it happen!))

[When Byakuya next appears, the beast has been sliced into tiny little pieces, the millions of cherry blossom-like blades have disappeared and he is holding his sword in his right hand and staring at it.]

... I do believe I have the situation under control.

[For the monster part, at least.]

Very well. I will leave you to it then.

[Just then, the silhouette of the masked man reappears next to Byakuya, and this time, he appears to take solid form. If the mask wasn't covering his entire face, he'd probably be looking very surprised. As it is, he is patting himself down, as if checking that he is indeed, solid.]

Master, this is...'

Senbonzakura. I didn't call for you, did I?

'I know! I don't undertstand! What's going on?

[They both seemed surprised, which meant this was not a planned development.]

Did an accident happen?

This is my zanpakutou's spirit. He should not be materializing without my permission.

... What is this place, Master? This isn't...

We are not in Soul Society or the Real World. Nor are we in Hueco Mundo. However, the explanations can wait. We have better things to do right now.

Could his manifestation be related to the weapon system the initiative uses?

They talked about sentient weapons. I assumed this would be of no consequence for me since my weapon is sentient already.

They did something to me? I don't really feel different.

I understand it to be some sort of growth system, I must confess I have not looked at the weapon they gave me since I received it, I'm not much for weapons and don't need one even in a situation that might cause for it.

I did not think it would affect him.

[He and Senbonzakura are supposed to have reached their full potential together already. But it's true that having Senbonzakura materialize does give him more power.]

It is hard to tell what might be affected. Has anyone fully looked into how the weapon system works?

Not that I know of, but I haven't been here long enough to know.

Perhaps it will be helpful to look into others who have seen their weapons evolve.

I suppose I shall have to ask around.

Hopefully you will find the answers you seek.

Someone had better have a good answer as to how they tampered with my sword.

I am sure a lot of people would like to know the same question, in case they are also seeing differences in the weapons they know well.

[Well, that's alarming. It's strange enough that they're all visible to humans, but to have his zanpakutou materialize as well?]

What just happened?

I have no idea.

[The monster is gone, and the zanpakutou is back in its unreleased form, but the materialized form of Senbonzakura is flickering next to Byakuya. And he seems as confused as Byakuya.]

What's going on? I didn't do this! Master...

[Somebody is making snide, pompous remarks about certain sword spirits being too eager for action for their own good, but her Master happens to be ignoring her for the time being as she's safely immaterial in her shikomizue.]

Is there anything that happened before the manifestation that you would regard as being out of the ordinary? Any change in the atmosphere or your reiryoku?

[Well, somebody should keep their snide remarks to themselves or somebody else is going to stick out their tongue at you, Benihime.]

I did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Nor was the enemy of a strength that would require Senbonzakura to act on his own. [As some zanpakutou are sometimes wont to do when their masters are in trouble.]

I don't really feel any different either.

[Yoruichi's frown deepens; neither Byakuya nor Senbonzakura felt anything out of the ordinary, which is unnerving, to say the least. With very rare exceptions, Captains had exquisite control over their zanpakutou, so any disruption should be felt by either or both parties]

Kisuke, maybe you and Benihime could do with some exercise.

[At the very least, putting Urahara in a combat situation might help them determine whether it was just an issue with Byakuya, or if all zanpakutou could be affected.]

We could use more hands with cleaning up the area.

[Of course, Urahara migth be more useful with the scientists inside, but Yoruichi doesn't have a zanpakutou to test right now.]

[If the situation weren't so bizarre, this would be where he would make a joke about certain parties suggesting that he's fat.]

Then we shall be down there presently, if that would be amenable to you Kuchiki-san.

[Quickly turns to Yoruichi.]

Are you of a mind to take some air with us, Yoruichi-san?

[She nods]

Might as well.

[Another set of eyes on the situation couldn't hurt.]

[There is a very impressed face on this video.]

The spirit of your sword?

[Why, hello there, unknown person.]

... Yes.

[Byakuya turns around to stare at Senbonzakura, who is currently patting himself down to see if he really is palpable.]

And he shouldn't be out.

Master, I didn't do this. I know you didn't call for me. I don't know what happened.

Fascinating. Perhaps some after-effect of being teleported, or the structure of magic in this universe being incompatible with your home.

Someone suggested that their ... weaponry system might have tampered with him.

[The sword spirit is getting a little agitated, mumbling under his breath about 'dishonorable pricks who did something to me'. Byakuya frowns.]

Senbonzakura, that is enough. Come back.

[The sword spirit snaps to attention and his form slowly dissolves into cherry blossom petals that gather at the empty hilt of Byakuya's katana, reforming the sword blade and allowing him to sheathe it again.]

Oh, you picked your sword to be your magical weapon? Now there's a cross-compatibility issue waiting to happen. I have a sword from home that I think of as my weapon, but I got an extra here, to avoid that issue.

But your sword isn't really a blade at heart. Mostly magic, I bet?

... There is no magic involved.

[It's true, too. To a shinigami, the relationship between a zanpakutou and his or her wielder is spiritual, yes, but it's also a question of biology, of how your soul is wired.]

And there is no reason for me to use any other weapon.

[Senbonzakura is a part of his soul, and they're a team. Being stuck here shouldn't change that.]

No magic?

[Hmm. That's interesting.]

Then what is it that binds the spirit to the weapon, and both to you?

[Allow him to raise an eyebrow there.]

Why should I tell you?

[Because, unknown person who is unknown, he has no idea of who or what you are, and he is not a very trusting person by nature.]

I'm curious. You're under no obligation to tell me, if you don't want.

In that case, I won't.

[Because the monsters don't really care that his sword just manifested itself with really awkward timing, they're still trying to eat people.]
