[ Edgeworth is sitting his room tonight as he address the network; someone who knew him well might suggest that he looks tired - exhausted, even - but if questioned about it, he'll just deny it. ]

Good evening, fellow transports. For those of you I've yet to meet, my name is Miles Edgeworth and I am a prosecuting attorney.

Tonight, I bring forward to you all an idea that I have been considering since my arrival here last month. As some of you may know, Exsilium currently has no internal judicial system. That is, no police, no courts, no prisons... and even worse, no laws. Both in light of recent events and out of concern for possible future occurrences, it would be my preference to implement some sort of system to deal with inter-transport conflicts.

I am willing to work to my full capacity to ensure the functionality of such a system and all that it entails, but I do acknowledge that I am only one person, and I cannot achieve my goals alone. So, I ask: who amongst us would be willing to assist me in this matter, so that we can ensure a safe and just society for all of us who have been brought here?

And a second question, if you don't mind: I am aware that there are many individuals from a wide array of disparate alternate realities, and that the judicial system as I know it might not exist where you are from. If this applies to you, I would welcome any information about how crime was handled in your reality.

You know, have you ever explained exactly how crime is handled in your reality?

[ Cue one teenager with her chin in her hand, elbow on the table, tilting her head to the side and quirking up an eyebrow.

She smiles a little after her question. ]

I'm glad to help. I just wonder where we're planning on keeping the lawbreakers and stuff like that.

1. I'd love to help you with anything you need! I believe in justice where people are treated fairly and given the benefit of the doubt. Punishment is important, but it can't be too unfair. Like, if someone's parents did a crime, that doesn't mean that the children should have to be born in prison and never leave.

2. Basically, there's no justice system. If you do something against the Charter - that's our absolute law - you're going to be locked away in our prison forever. If you're accused, that's it. Even speaking against Charter is against the Charter, so, things are pretty peaceful, but our prison is pretty full too. And everyone's a little bit scared, honestly.

We could establish a prison, and guards to protect it. There are only a few hundred of us as is, so the building itself would not need to be terribly large for now.

And I did mention the three aspects of my reality's judicial system: the police, the courts, and corrections. The police force deals with the prevention and detection of crime, and has the power to arrest those thought to be involved in criminal activity. Then, suspects are brought into detention, where they are kept until they can either pay bail, or for serious crimes - until their case goes to trial. Trials occur in a court of law. In a criminal trial in my country, a prosecuting attorney represents the state and presents the case of the defendant - that is, the accused - to the court. The defendant has the right to have a defense attorney [ and it's almost imperceptible, the way Edgeworth's jaw clenches when he says those words - he'd promised himself that he'd keep this broadcast as unbiased as possible, but the thought of those types of lawyers still make him angry ], to defend their case and potentially prove the defendant's innocence.

After a guilty verdict has been declared, there is usually another trial held for sentencing. For the length of a sentence, for serious crimes, the culprit is kept in prison, where rehabilitation occurs safely away from the rest of society. However, the death penalty was not uncommon, as well.

What do you mean potentially prove the defendant's innocence? I thought you said you were from the United States.

[ She follows, if she's not making as many connections as she'd like. ~~Plus Government is like two years away in school forgive her for certain lacks filled in by television and "common" knowledge.~~ ]

1. As is apparent by your response to the second question, it seems that you do not have any prior experience in regards to the judicial system as I know it. However, I will keep your offer of help in mind. Are there any particular skills you possess that would be of use in pursuing our shared goal? Also: Evidence is a vital aspect of determining guilt in a court of law. Criminal proceedings cannot function without it. This is not something I wish to change. As a matter of course, I would not have a child suffer the consequences of a parent's crime. 2. Who is responsible for ensuring that people follow the rules of this 'Charter'? Is it the government?

I am. Los Angeles, to be precise. What makes you question that?

Did the future change that much? Because I'm pretty sure the laws I live with state you're innocent until proven guilty. Maybe it's a wording thing, since there's nothing "potential" about innocence, just guilt?

[ Unless all those law shows lied like dirty liars but Ally McBeal would never do that to Collette, would she?! ]

Indeed. [ He sounds a bit non-plussed, but recovers soon enough. ] What else could there be?

Fairness lasts only as long as the system remains strong in it's beliefs and it's objectiveness. I doubt that it would for long given at how much fluctuation occurs in this place.

Oh, there's always something going on here. People being attacked, impromptu trips to tropical islands...

But, that's good! One shouldn't try to take on more than one large-scale project at a time, it seems to me.

Once a case makes it to court, the evidence against the defendant is already very strong. Thus, it is up to the defense to provide further evidence which would prove the defendant's innocence. That does not happen often.

I don't plan on it. And these recent attacks is just one of the reasons which I have brought my plans to the network today.

Um... Did the OJ Simpson trial not happen in your world?

Why would potential fluctuations prevent the system from remaining objective?

You think that they would not pull in people who are mass murdering sociopaths?

And what course of action would you propose for said recent attacks, then?

Or who would be considered mass murderers according to some people from their home! Wow, people could be lying or even telling the truth right from the start, and we wouldn't know. And should we hold that against people when they're here?

[ Her head hurts. ]

That's way more thought than I want to put into this.

... That's besides the point. In my reality, the way court trials are run has changed significantly over the past few years. We do not have jurors, and there has now been a time limit imposed on the length of trials. Trials must now be resolved within three days, so that the backlog of cases does not become overwhelming for prosecutors and that the right to a speedy trial is maintained.

This is the system in which I worked.

Holy cow! Three days? Are you sure your justice system isn't infiltrated by Yeerks?!

None that can currently undertaken without the presence of a judicial system, outside of what people here have already been doing.

No.

But would you put those kind of people in charge of something that should be fair? When their own viewpoints are skewered to a position where crime and punishment do not register as important, or where they feel any crime deserves the maximum amount of punishment regardless of what others will say?

Or should we ask the person who lost his hands because he did something he doesn't remember and who was not even one of us?

Well, so one imagines, but that hardly answers my question, hmm?

That is a possibility, but I still fail to see how that would prevent the system from remaining objective. However, if you're referring to incidents that may have taken place back in their own realities... If people kill here, they will be punished. If they state an intent to kill, then they too will be punished for that. Is that clear?

You mean hypothetically, then, if such a system existed now? With the presence of an organized police force, instead of separate groups of individuals, it is my belief that they may have found him after the first incident instead of allowing the attacks to go on for so long.
