[ video ]
[ The video feed that flickers to life is shaky at first, as the tablet is adjusted against a wall; the young man that sits before it, pulling his thickly-gloved hands back, is somber, in contrast with the garishly-colored snow jacket he appears to be bundled up in.
Speaking slowly, formally, hands on the edge of the desk like a podium: ] My name is Chrysos Kineas, of Cepheus. By trade, I am a mechanical engineer; in this community, there are few other things I am able to contribute.
I bring a proposal to those of the floor, and request your patience in hearing it out. Other postings have spoken of issues of governance, law, the war's direction and other important matters; but to my knowledge, the issue of organized collaboration of skills, or the lack thereof, has not been fully addressed. Though perhaps secondary to the aforementioned, it does not seem one to be simply neglected.
To put it simply, I would like to propose the formation of trade-guilds, or technical divisions, in some formal capacity. [ A pause, to let that sink in. ] At least two, that of-- [ scientists, he almost continues, but hesitates. There's far too much here that that doesn't account for. Correcting himself: ] --philosophers, and engineers. These would serve several functions.
First: to make more focused and up-scaled efforts towards solving practical issues, in various areas: developing and upgrading our infrastructure. Salvaging and analyzing what artefacts we recover from this world, from across its history, and from those of other worlds who might be willing to contribute theirs. Reverse-engineering what we can, and putting it to functional use.
Second: the cross-diffusion of as much expertise as possible among individuals-- for the diversity of knowledge and experience present among us in arts natural and supernatural is far from inconsiderable. A guild would be a learning space not only for the trained, but for those who wish to be trained.
[ Another pause, weighing his words... but he keeps his eyes fixed on the camera, as good as the eyes of his audience. ]
Regardless of your stance on the war... an acceptable resolution to our collective greater situation does not seem likely unless we bring our skills together to be more than that of a loose collective. Whether that resolution entails continued well-being in this present time, or return to our respective worlds, or conclusion to this war, it is all the same. A whole can be greater than the sum of its parts.
[ A firm nod at the screen. ]
That is all I have to say. I would hear what thoughts you have to offer.
