Well, his name is Mr. Gold, and he's a pawnbroker. We met quite a long time ago, but wound up separated for a very, very long time. But true love has a way of working itself out.

A pawnbroker is someone you can sell your items to temporarily - say you're in a bind and need some money, you'd give them something of yours as collateral.

We lost each other before the town. Back before the curse was cast - we knew each other before the town even existed.

It can have its moments. Generally speaking, there are far worse things he could've been occupying himself with.

He has a good heart. Good intentions. Someone caring and thoughtful underneath everything else. That's all I can really ask for.

no, he hasn't. i'm glad, i don't want him somewhere like this

That's very noble. It's hard to see the ones we care for get hurt, or threatened.

[She's not so sure it's noble. Someone like him, he could really make a difference for these people. Not wanting him here is selfish, but - if he were hurt or even worse, she's not sure what she would do. She wants to keep believing that he can't come here, that someday she can go back to him, to a world completely untouched by this horrible war.]

yeah. i mean if i had my way nobody would have to be stuck here obviously

It's not very fair - for those we love, or for anybody.. Sometimes I even wonder if it's conducive, forcing people into this with no determined way out.

i don't know. i mean, i know it's not fair for us to be stuck here, but it wouldn't be very fair to us to have our worlds in danger and not know or be able to do anything about it. it wouldn't be fair for the people here to not have anyone to help them, either. i guess the longer i'm here the easier it is to see both sides

Either way, none of it's exactly desirable. This is definitely the lesser of two evils, but either way you look at it, the choices are rather grim. It's difficult when both options make sense.

i know it's not desirable, but i guess it seems pointless to focus on how it's unfair. there's nothing we can really do about that. we can look for the good parts in it, though, and try to help the best we can.

I didn't mean to make it seem like I was focusing on the lack of fairness; in all honesty, I agree with you. There's no use in moping about it, and we're not going to get anything done without action.
