Is anyone else starting to feel a little disturbed by how quiet things have been lately? Maybe it's just an old soldier's paranoia talking.

[He sighs and then continues]

I'm taking a group out to the outer lands on the island. Part training, part working out the geography a little better so we know where the dangers are. Leaving Saturday morning, back when I say so, but probably not more than a few days - only so far you can go in direction on an island. Let me know if you're interested.


[Filtered to spec ops team]

Unless you have something more immediately pressing, I expect you to be there. We'll meet by the hold at six am.

Not ringing a bell, sorry. [X-Men don't really deal with Cosmic Things] Some big bad where you're from?

[getoffmyearth]

That's one way of putting it. He tends to be involved in attempts to wipe out all life and destroy the universe, one way or another. I was trying to think of someone big enough that you couldn't possibly miss him.

[Of course, maybe if he'd tried somebody else...but Galactus doesn't really come up on Peter's radar as "big bad", more like "cosmic entity you have to live with because what are you gonna do."]

Ah - got a few of those in my world, too. Though a lot of them would settle for just genocide. Doesn't help that my family seems to have a tendency towards channeling cosmic forces of rebirth, either.

What kind of cosmic forces of rebirth are we talking about here, exactly?

The Phoenix Force - it's... both sides of the coin. Elemental creation - but also elemental destruction, so that the new can be born.

Oh, fuck.

[This seems like an appropriate thing to say to that.]

...Yeah, that's the usual reaction.

I want to say "at least I know what it is" but I don't think that's much to take any kind of comfort or consolation from.

You do? [He sounds genuinely surprised] I always thought it was mostly, well... a mutant thing.

If it's cosmic, I've usually at least heard of it. And we get news from Earth, from time to time. Never saw it in person, though, or had to do anything about it.

Better than some of the intergalatic reactions - fucking Shi'ar.

But my mother, sister, and daughter have all been stable Phoenix-hosts. Jean and Rachel for a number of years, at that.

Yeah, the Shi'ar- well, they're. Shi'ar, about things. [Really what else is there to say about that. It's like the Kree. They're just gonna be Kree about everything.]

Sooooo- [Does he want to talk about Phoenix hosts? Not really. What if that'd just be poking the wounds of a guy who sounds like he might be a great ally?] Who does that make you?

A mutant? Part of a really strange family? [He actually sounds fairly relaxed - he didn't know his mother's family, so the Shi'ar killing them is more principle than personal. He'll leave that revenge-quest for Rachel]
