[Barbara’s been here a few days, now. She’s explored a good chunk of the city after memorising the maps. She’s scrolled through dozens of network posts, getting a feel for her sudden compatriots. (In other words, "building an extensive database of files".)

She still feels out of her element – she has no tower, here, no network of power and persuasion – but she’s slowly starting to relax.

So her smile is more or less genuine when she makes her own introduction.]

Hello, everyone. I’m Barbara. [She considered an alias, back when she first arrived, but she didn’t see much point.] I'm new, so I've got my fair share of questions. [A fleeting, rueful smile that hides her frustration.]

How well-integrated have the Transports become? How many of you have jobs here? Have we set up any regulations or enforcement? Has anyone attempted any sort of education system? [She knows some of this already, but she'd like a number of experiences and perspectives.]

[The air-tight encryption isn't so much necessary as it is habit.]

I hear you're a good man to talk to about mechanics.

[The woman on the video feed has a distinctly military air to her bearing despite her civilian attire. As cut and dry as Shepard would like to make herself sound, she's never been particularly good at hiding her frustration:]

In my opinion? Not very. Transport-native relationships have deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks, but I can't say that Transports were ever very well integrated in the first place and most attempts to set up some kind of infrastructure tend to be undermined from within.

[She grins. It's not an especially pleasant one.] Too many cooks in the kitchen. --There is a Transport police force, though from what I understand its ranks have pretty much been decimated.

Speaking as someone not really familiar with the inner workings - hit or miss. Their visibility was, or continues to be, low. Though from what I gather they were working through the native police force, so that might account for some of the slip now. I can't imagine their job's gotten easier and it wouldn't surprise me if their contract's been revoked.

[Which, to be fair, is all verbage she's making up on the fly. Surely someone signed paperwork, right? It's been her experience that you can't do anything official without swimming through a sea of red tape first.]

I'm Pascal, and maybe I can help you on some of 'em?

It doesn't seem like the Transports mix in too well, honestly; my friend Cheria's working on a relief organization, but that may not be able to do too much for a while...

[Haruto looks and sounds calm, but he's sitting up straight, his fingers wound together toward the bottom of the feed. From the backdrop, he's in the library.] Nice to meet you, Barbara. I'm Haruto Souma. I've been here just going on seven months, if that gives you some perspective on this--

It depends on the Transport, in my experience. The more outlandish you look, the less likely you're going to find the Exiles particularly pleasant. Most of them'll take your money, if nothing else. I wouldn't call anybody I've met well integrated, but if you look like a normal human, you can usually find people who don't totally hate you. Take that as you will. There's never been much of a movement to contribute to the infrastructure--probably because those of us who want to help are dealing with construction, lately.

[He frowns, considering, and shifts his hands to drum his fingers on the tabletop. How to put this... Perhaps candid is best?]

We had police, but they were never particularly centralized even when they were running at their best. Blame the Exsilium side for that, I think. They all kind of started disappearing one after another a couple of months back--along with the people running our end of the justice system. Last I remember is Adam, who was, ah, killed back in March and couldn't be revived. There was some kind of committee forming to liaison with the Initiative back around that and the return experiment, but after they disagreed with the Initiative PR department trying to spin it as not so bad, we haven't heard much. [He sounds a little bitter, by the end. He coughs, to regain his composure--]

You'd have to talk to one of them for more information on that. Susan Storm, maybe, if you can get a hold of her.

Oh hey Barbara! I'm kinda looking for a job, but I'm not really finding anything too much. I don't know a lot about what's going on around here, but I think if you want to find some you'll be able to.

Gordon? [ It's that surname combined with the first name that gets an eyebrow lift on Kate's end. Isn't that the name of Commissioner Gordon's daughter? ]

Some of us here have jobs, but mostly because we make them. [He's been trying to set up a club himself so he can have an HQ again like back home, a proper one, but the bombings swiftly killed that notion.] Now, let me get through the rest of the questions here. Let's see, we're mostly integrated, besides the fact that we keep getting attacked, I don't think we have a real law enforcement, like the police, and education? I really have no idea if we have anyone patient enough or any teachers willing to help for that sort of thing.

( Steph just made a Babs' post! sound, and thus Ellie is now looming over the network. As effectively as one can loom via video, which is not terrible.

Mostly she just looks kind of surly. )

So you're Barbara.

( Arms crossed and looking mightily suspicious.

Adults are not her favourite, and Bats sound a bit shit. )

Nice to meet you, Barbara! I'm Collette.

( All the direct, paid for work she's done, she's done while literally being someone else. Since she can't -- or won't -- advertise that, Collette goes with the safer option. )

You can be pretty well integrated! People know me, I know people around here, but I used to do a lot more volunteering, which really helped. If you spend time talking and you listen, you learn a lot!

It's harder when you look different, or you act different, but part of the whole like, acting thing is okay because people are still different coming out of the drugs than they are on them.

It's nice to meet you, Barbara. I'm Saori.

Well, the past events have strained relations between us and the local population. I know it's especially tough for those who aren't considered normal humans in appearance.

As for jobs, I actually run the Uji tea house. It's a small establishment, I've been able to provide a few jobs there.

That would all depend on how you conduct yourself, how well you can be considered harmless and how well you can make the natives find your company tolerable. Mind, we have had people who rather kill the natives than help and we are always in a state of flux thanks to the technology that brought us here.

The police are not much even on the native's side. As for you having other questions, I have been here for over a year and can probably answer more than most.

Ah yes, I am Takegami.

There were a couple of people on here talking about getting some sort of school started, but I don't think anything actually happened. And... I'm not sure if this counts as the regulation you're talking about, but a bunch of Transports set up some sort of committee for talking to the Initiative and making sure we know what's going on - it's more official than everything else I've seen here.

[Which is to say, very very angry people yelling at the Initiative and the Exiles alike.]

They're called, uh...

[He pauses, because he doesn't have this memorized right off the bat, and glances behind the camera to where he's got some notes pinned up on his corkboard.]

The Department of Initiative-Transport Relations.

As you may know, there's very little order here.

[ Mengde commented after a moment or two of silence. He remembered Barbara fondly from their conversation before, but he's still in the dark regarding most things about Exsilium. ]

It's complete anarchy.

Uh... Well, I guess. I never had a job before? Cos my allowance usually covered anything I might want to get. So I'm good at like... Usual stuff. I mean, I was an archaeology student but I doubt there's gonna be a job like that around here.

[He ruffles his hair]

I guess I'm really good with a bike, and I can rock climb... I'm an okay typist. I dunno! Maybe I shoulda got a job at some point...
