When did that change?

I admit that my parents thought my behavior was very undignified and dishonorable.

I heard someone playing the piano better than me and he was a junior to me in school. I could not let him beat me so I picked up my lessons.

And then I beat him and I found enjoyment in playing. Of course, it did help that I was introduced to other music than that approved of by my parents.

Parents are pretty big on that whole approving of what you're doing thing. What kind of music did you end up finding back then?

Led Zeppelin.

You're kidding? No way!

( She breaks out laughing. )

My parents were rather strict. Outside of classical, the only other music I heard was enka.

What's enka?

[onemoredeath]

It is a type of traditional ballad set to pop music. I think you would have called it easy listening.

Probably the kind of stuff they'd play in the hospital waiting rooms.

( She pulls a face, not terribly pleased. )

I use to get sick whenever I heard it. Father always had it blaring in the car and I would get so car sick...

Your poor stomach! Mom had a mix of whatever rock she liked and a bunch of stuff from Bollywood. What do you blare when you're driving on your own -- or did, since I don't think any of us own an electric car.

Whatever was appealing to me at the time, although I stayed away from enka.

This is making me miss CDs. There's not so much music around here that people aren't playing or making for themselves. It's so much different from back home.
