Because those in charge had either felt that you will prove useful in this war, or that they were aiming for someone else and you happen to get in the way.

This is a war fought through time. We go back, we do something like... oh, save the favorite cat of the queen. No one dies as the cat is caught before it falls from the carriage. Or we go to make sure a shipment of tea reaches a different harbor.

The fighting happens sometimes, but the warfare is not what I would consider belonging on a battleground.

They want to change the past in order to affect this future. To give them a fighting chance against the people of the United Earth.

That doesn't help explain why we're needed. We're not from here, don't they have enough fighters to win this struggle?

No. we have medics and academics as well as fighters and spies.

Why would you need academics in a fight!?

Because sometimes fighting involves more than taking a long sharp stick and sticking it into the other guy.
